It’s YouTube music, which is showing popular “podcasts” on its explore page. Must be just because it’s popular because nothing in my algo on either youtube or YouTube music would suggest this shit.
Why is he wearing Templar tabard? The Templars were barely restrained religious fanatics that hoarded wealth and placed themselves above those around them…oh. So incel republicans?
Part of fascism is reducing everything to an aesthetic.
Make it all conformity and make it easy to exclude others.
Much like an armband. Maybe with your fascist logo on it.
your fascist logo
Excuse you?
Part of fascism is reducing everything to an aesthetic
Maybe with your fascist logo on it.
Never thought I’d ever need to explain Nazi swastika armbands to someone…
they just thought the “you” was personal, but it is general
Yes.
Those are sharp words, mind where you point them.
Ah yes, the Charlie Kirk “we selectively found 10 dumb people to debate and then edited out any part where they come across okay” genre.
How in the world do they end up with 10 hours after editing it down?
I didn’t notice that, it is an awful lot. I wonder if it’s a series of interviews recorded over days, rather than one big meeting.
It’s also possible this is just the raw video, and then there’s a bunch of “best takedowns” compilations they actually push. Like how Charlie Kirk would do live debates with inexperienced suckers.
Like how Charlie Kirk would do live debates with inexperienced suckers.
I have not watched too many of them, but I’ll never forget the guy who handed his ass to him on the subject of same sex relationships and the bible. Actually I think that’s the only one I’ve ever watched lmao. It’s funnier when those guys run into people who can actually debate.
I found a number of really good rising streamers and progressive advocates back in the day by watching Charlie Kirk debates and probably became a lot more involved with further left politics than I would have normally if it wasn’t for Charlie Kirk.
Truly, we still carry the flame. 🔥
In the end of it all, Charlie Kirk leaned left.
Being a series of interviews would make sense. That’s about an hour each. Still wild to release as an episode and not a playlist.
Yeah, but the VOLUME is the selling point here, I think. I’ve never heard of this fucking dude and even if it was t transparently bad faith content his name wouldn’t make me (a universal “me” who is open to this) click.
The “it’s ten on one and he still destroyed the females” piece is what’s supposed to lure you in.
This is basically all of media now, there is no such thing as objective media of any kind anymore, everything produced is meant to pander to some group or another.
Even if we accept the passing of the internet, we have to also understand that this is how it’s going to be always, forever. Unless social attitudes broadly change, this is just what the world is going to do with recordable content from now until eternity.
Everything you see, no matter your political ideology or attitude or values, is cultivated and selected just for you to reinforce your beliefs even if that reinforcement is inaccurate.
A few of you reading this are going to frown and downvote and roll your eyes, and to this I warn you: the more you think you’re outside of this system, or the more you think you’re invulnerable to manipulation… the more vulnerable you really are.
there is no such thing as objective media of any kind anymore
All media has bias. Always has. Literally even just in the choice of what to report on, what to investigate, how and what gets written about. Best thing anyone can do is realize this, and reject the billionaires narratives and write their own shit. Make zines and hand them out! Make political shitposts on the internet! Make radical stickers and graphiti. Reject the manufactured narrative and write your own and share it to normalize it!
I can’t be the only person on here that’s fully off the algorithm/surveillance grid. It’s still possible to get caught in bubbles the old-fashioned way, I guess. I try to listen to something/someone new and weird every once in a while.
I basically only use Youtube to watch let’s plays (video games) never dipped my toe into other media site to see how it tries to show that stuff. Then if I need something new to watch I’ll find newer games I may be interested in and search accordingly or watch older videos of people that I enjoyed.
I’m sure that keeps me in the bubble of entertainment vs political stuff but really I’ve rarely seen that stuff pop up. I’d probably stop all together if I only saw some of the crap I’ve heard of people’s experiences.
New can be interesting but rather just prefer a good player explaining why they’re playing like they do. Some strategy games (paradox) can be quite complicated to understand the finer points. Makes life better not hearing/watching dumbasses.
Public service announcement that if you use a VPN, a private browser and Invidious they can’t really track you. Actually just Invidious might be enough, I’ve never looked into it in detail.
I use Tor but it isn’t seamless, and you do have to go for a really low quality setting.
No you’re right, the only way to win the game is to not play.
As long as you’re staying aware of what you’re taking in, and you regularly think about how you’re thinking, you’ll be miles ahead of the broad swath of humanity.
At first I frowned and rolled my eyes Then I read that and thought, Hmm yeah they’re probably right I’m in my own privately curated echo chamber. But, it can’t be all that bad if that private echo chamber is all about compassion and empathy, right? Sometimes living in a bubble can be a bit healthy right? I dunno, rambling.
Some of us are bombarded by right wing propaganda off the internet. When I come home, I don’t want to be bombarded by it online. You want to know what radicalized me? Being “conservative presenting” and getting to hear what republicans really think when there’s not a minority or “liberal” in the room. None of them have a single idea of their own and just revel in cruelty. That’s what they think offline and when they think they’re in “good company.” Online, they just engage in bad faith arguments and it gets tiring counting them constantly.
That’s a good point, what do we choose to feed ourselves? There’s massive industry built around people’s food diets and almost no attention paid to what our media diets are like and what they’re doing to us.
I think at the end of the day we all need to really understand how maliable our brains are and how easily we can change the way we think just because of the stuff we’re watching or listening to, and this has been an unpopular topic for a long time because it makes people worry that what they enjoy might not be good for them, but I think as long as we stay aware and keep our diet varied enough we probably will do a lot better than people who just mindlessly draw emotions from people shouting on Twitch streams all week long.
Nah, after trump was elected, every now and then YouTube wanna sneak in some incel stuff… It’s fucked up, and I hate I have to still use youtube in some occasions.
I can’t prove it but I just know they are making money on insecurities of young men and radicalizing them in the process.
You can prove it. YouTube gives ad revenue to affiliate and partner creators. Manosphere content pushes the argument that “Life is hard for men”—verifying the feelings of stress and FOMO and resentment and inadequacy natural for all in this social sphere; blame that as being “because modern women…blahblah”—presenting a worldview that puts that responsibility on another group that isn’t their audience; and then tears down some strawman of said “modern woman”.
This content validates the painful feelings that toxic masculinity tells young men to suppress, without giving a tangible responsibility to the target audience. The narrative is simple: men need good women to be successful; and woke women are bad. This narrative also provides a justification for any feelings of inadequacy that again shifts the blame onto women. If a man needs a good woman to be good, and you aren’t happy with your life, then that’s not your fault—it’s the fault of women!
The difficult aspect is that this content connects with real feelings that need to be validated; and many of them are based in reality. Like… HR is shredding your resumes, but that’s still true if the rep/higher-up is a man. Work culture is toxic, but not because of feminism. You probably aren’t doing as well as prior generations; but that’s the economy and the underlying trauma of 21st century chaos. School did fuck you over, but not because it “emasculates boys”. We can’t just attack their manosphere beliefs; and labeling it as Misogyny or Violent just makes young men identify with those labels. We have to provide an alternate worldview.
Tom Cruise lampooned these people in the 90s, its not a new thing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2y6zxvMtPE
Yet another reason I’m dropping streaming in favor of ripping CDs and listening to locally stored files, like it’s 2009 again
Checkout Bandcamp for stuff you didn’t buy but want to and SoulSeek if you are missing some backups.
Oh, 1,000%! I use the nicotine+ front end for soulseek on Linux, and it’s wonderful
I had been using YouTube for “background noise” a lot — nothing political, just movie reviews and video essays about pop culture. In general, my YouTube diet is pretty non-toxic.
But I fell down a rabbit hole researching a band lately and have been obsessively listening to music for a couple of weeks. Mostly on my MP3 player to give my phone a break. And holy cow it feels nice not to be bombarded with curated Content all the time. I didnt even realize how consistently/constantly there was just STUFF on that, while not bad, wasn’t really contributing anything to my life.
for “background noise”
FWIW there are also radios, including public ones where content (without ads) is delivered via the Internet, usable via
cvlcormpvor even the browser (so nothing to install).I am indeed aware of the existence of radios. I dislike radio because I prefer to have some level of control over what I’m listening to. Even with algorithmic slop I can skip tracks if I want.
You can switch stations.
It seems like I have offended you in some way, and let me assure you that I don’t know how, but I am also utterly incurious as to why.
You haven’t. I’m not offended. I’m literally just sharing a solution.
FWIW I know because that’s what I have been every day for the last few months. I have been using music streaming for years, paying SoundCloud user for a while. Few months ago during my on-going transition away from surveillance capitalism I stopped more and more of commercial cloud services. One of the very last few had been music. I tried quite a few solutions and one of my fear was about music discovery. I thought if I download files then it will be hard to get new music. I looked at technical solutions, e.g. recommendation algorithm, offline and online (with API). I also noticed that my usage was split in at least 2 different listening mode : active vs passive. Active is when I specifically pick a song or an album because I crave it. Passive is when I want background sound, nearly like barely better than white noise. For active it was OK but for passive my own selection was too exciting. I then tried a great public and free French radio ( FIP.fr ) and that solved (by luck) both needs of passive listening AND music discovery. That being said I do not always love the FIP selection so sometimes I’ll switch to other stations hence why I said so. That’s it, nothing more.
Jellyfin works a treat in our household and we go to the library a lot more now.
Is that the show where the guy invites on OF models, then insults and humiliates them? Where the models are only going on there because so many of his listeners then subscribe to their OF?
Yes.
The psychology of those incels would be fascinating to study
They enjoy insulting and humiliating these women for doing sex work, then they go ahead and pay for it
Granted that’s been the history of sex work for thousands of years, this is just one of the most direct examples of it. Wonder if it boils down to them wanting to project their own shame and guilt on the women
From what I’ve gleaned, there’s a tendency to see the sex act as shameful, but moreso for the woman. So psychologically, they’re still “owning them” in that exchange.
It’s entirely possible the camgirls that go on this channel are the kind that see their clients as marks, as well, so there’s a funny kind of symmetry to the exchange.
There’s a girl on Instagram whose whole schtick is that she sends feet pics and stuff to MAGA guys and then openly mocks them for financing her lifestyle and donates some of the money to progressive causes. She has been doing it for months and I’m convinced part of the appeal for these guys is the humiliation ritual of being “owned.”
Oooh, the layers of psychology keep piling on. So they’re using a sex worker, who they probably believe is inferior and doing a bad thing, if they’re MAGA, but are themselves into being sexually humiliated within the context of a private interaction.
Yeah, we’re an interesting species sometimes.
It always just strikes me as immaturity. People with a physiological demand for sex reaching for what they can’t have in polite society, then letting out their rage and humiliation on people lower than them on the pole, because they never learned how to process their emotions.
Sometimes I wish I didn’t have a conscience. I could be so rich if I didn’t have things like guilt or shame.
In my experience, having grown up in an upper-middle class neighborhood with a mixed bag of people who all went different directions…
It’s not the lack of a conscience that makes you rich. It’s the wealth that degrades your morality.
“I’m going to be an asshole in order to get rich” has not - in my experience - produced my success. I know plenty of shitheads who squandered their family fortunes and ended up doing shit work for shit pay. On the flip side, a few friends and acquaintances who did go on to be successful turned increasingly toxic and miserable as their stars climbed.
Well yeah, just being an asshole doesn’t make money. But when you see how easily people are tricked into giving away their money to unethical actors, it’s easy to see one’s own conscience as a roadblock. Like, “If I would feel comfortable scamming people, I could be rich.” But I’m not comfortable scamming people, even if it would be easy. Ergo, my conscience keeps me from making easy money.
I’ve known some nice rich people, though. It’s more that it makes you more of whatever you were before.
Ditto on the “it’s not as easy as just being mean” part. Jails are chock full of counterexamples.
Incel propaganda on an app developed by Alphabet? Surely the first time this has ever happened.
I know this is rich coming from someone who wears a surplus Czech army field jacket, but that guy comes across as an annoying dweeb with that shitty ass crusader larp getup that looks like it cost less than the Mont Python and the Holy Grail horse budget.
There’s music in your incel propaganda app
Get Tidal or Quobuz or Bandcamp
Tidal used to be the only good music streaming app. Now it is being flooded with AI music in every radio and suggested playlist. Their integrity towards artists didn’t last long.
Thankfully, I don’t use Tidal for music discovery. I luckily have a lot of people I’ve met over the years that love music, perform themselves, work for venues, or are crew for artists. That plus indie radio like KEXP and NPR’s Tiny Desk Concerts has kept me exploring for new music via recommendations from those areas.
I use Tidal for high fidelity music with a more acceptable artist payout than Spotify.
That said, I’m slowly working towards going back to the old days where my massive CD collection rips (i still have those binders too), direct purchases of high fidelity content sitting on my network share, and records aremy primary source of listening pleasure. The only problem here is acquiring the hardware to scale thanks to the AI boom buying up all the production lines of consumer grade hardware, and business class storage drives having gone up in cost. Technically I can afford it, but I could also spend that same money and buy tickets to several local shows for both my wife and I, which will support the live music industry and artists more directly.
That’s odd. I’ve never heard any AI music on Tidal
qobuz is good, but the lack of a roku app kills me. I mainly use my livingroom tv as a stereo
Youtube music got weird for me, about a week or two ago. I have it as part of my YT subscription, I barely use it. I opened it the other day and they recently started pushing this obviously AI generated like… porn music. I’m not sure how else to describe it.
Such gems like “I flashed me gash & got free bread”

Yes, I did listen to one of them out of curiosity, and now it won’t stop recommending the filth even though I’ve blocked 20 of the songs and said don’t show me stuff like this.
What the actual fuck
I agree. I mean its a nice incentive to leave and find alternatives, it just sucks when yove used a service for decades and it turns to shit.
Yes, I did listen to one of them out of curiosity
That is how they get you. And probably the algorithm thinks you can be baited again.
here’s the link in case anybody wonders
And now it’s in my Lemmy. Don’t propagate the brainless cunt and give them another platform, just downvote and ignore.
This is mildly infuriating, it’s meant to show things people find offensive or objectionable. If you don’t want to see offensive or objectionable shit block the sub. There’s no way to remove this section on my explore tab, or even down vote or say I don’t want to see episodes like this.
Does press and holding the image not work? You should be able to select “not interested” from there. At least I can with YTM.
No, that works on stuff recommended on my home, but for this, the popular episodes section on the explore tab, there’s no option.
popular episodes section on the explore tab
Found your issue.
Ah damn, sorry.
YouTube algorithm tries really hard to make me far right every few months. It suddenly starts recommending me fox news and “progressives destroyed in a debate” type shit videos. Usually lasts about a day.
I bet somebody is paying for that shit to pop into your feed.
lots of the religious right think that if you just see it, you’re going to agree and like, you know, become one of them. Which is funny because I find those kinds of content repulsive.
(Clint’s Reptiles, though? oh yeah. dude’s a legend.)
Sad thing is it works on a lot of naive young people.
But this is because of the naivety and lack of critical thinking skills. Not because they are young.
Rather, because public education has been gutted to prevent kids from being taught such skills.
And even more egregiously, taught to be incurious. To not ask questions. To obey.
This is not just because of public education gutting. It’s a worldwide phenomenon, even in places with the highest ranked public schools on earth.
the simple truth is bombarding someone with a certain way of seeing the world makes them more likely to see the world that way. It’s propaganda, plain and simple.
That slop doesn’t work on us, but there are an alarming number of people who see content and just agree with it. No critical thinking whatsoever. I used to think that was just the Boomers and maybe some jaded Gen X folk; but the mass-dependency on generative AI showed me that Gen Z and Millenials are just as susceptible.
I suspect the slop only works on people who already nominally believe or agree with it.
Like it’s no surprise there’s so many women-haters in the Christian faith. Because if you read the scriptures at face value god hates women, just as one example.
Edit: As for ai shit, it’s less that everyone buys it or whatever, it’s that the accept the ai as authoritative because they don’t understand how it works. And it’s presented as a convincing thing. It still takes a lot to produce a convincing deepfake.
Or you’ll fall for the bait, hatewatch and comment, which will help boost the video
Nope.
Right click the dots “don’t recommend this channel.”
I practically live by the “don’t recommend” options, although recently I’ve started getting “block this video/channel”, which is peculiar.
The religious zealots would HATE Clint, because he has out his rational mind and scientific literature explanation of the universe before what the Bible says
I mean, I wasn’t trying to suggest they don’t.
Just that his YT channel is alway good for a timeline cleanse.
Weird. Youtube doesn’t do that to me. It is insistant however that I need to watch AI made videos about why linux is better than linux.
No, not a typo. The titles are usually along the lines of “Is Mint better than linux? Lets find out!”
Or
“Ubuntu just can’t compete with Linux!”
And the one time I accidently clicked one of these videos, it was the most obvious AI slop you’d ever seen.
Maybe it doesn’t suggest these right wing videos because they see how much Steven Colbert, and Last Week Tonight I watch.
Then there’s the weird videos. Not AI. Just…weird.
Like the video of a teenager dipping a pickle into a jar of tostitos queso, and repeatedly saying “pickles n cheese, pickles n cheese, pickles n cheese…” while making squishing noises with the cheese.
But since I clicked it, and watched 30 seconds of it, youtube now reccomends me videos from time to time of this guy doing random things with pickles.
I miss when it reccomended the guy with the duck. The duck was cool.
I feel like the middle-aged guy that I am, because it keeps suggesting lawncare, forging (“can I melt and cast himilayan salt rocks?” He did, it was fantastic), silly engineering (“I’m going to see if I can 3d print a rifle that will make a nerf dart break the speed of sound…”), dnd (I don’t even play dnd, and i still enjoy the videos), and Jon Stewart. And… a weird mix of civil rights people showing bad behavior of police, and police supporter showing bad behavior of people (honestly both are entertaining, because police are awful and so are people).
But it doesn’t even try for that right-wing bullshit.
Same. Tons of baldness medication ads and retro gaming suggestions, no right wing bullshit. FWIW I’ve been using like/subscribe and “show less of this” to get good recommendations. I don’t even get disturbing police videos, but I only watch those here.
it’s just rage bait. I guess nazis get “woke” videos, or whatever they consider the other side. goog only cares about money. If they would want to convert you they would show only a bit more conservative each time and slowly get to the far side. Showing the total opposite hardly convinces anyone, basically the viewer would have to accept that all their previous believes were false, it rarely happens.
Mine does the same with the left and feminism. Which is fine. The only time it’s gotten sketchy is after my deep dive into the manosphere and their birth rate decline stuff.
i just refresh the page, and keep clicking on videos in my niche to get rid of it. im never logged in though, youtube is liking trying to capture some people that are browsing, and hook them in. people that are logged in have thier feeds curated to them that can ignore right wing videos.

I guess I should be proud YT knows better than to try that with me?
That sounds like something YouTube would promote
I started watching a lot of home-improvement type videos on YouTube, and suddenly since then all the ads now assume my dick is horribly bent and doesn’t work, and that I uncontrollably shit and piss myself.
It’s so pervasive I can’t even watch YouTube on my living room TV with my young kids around because I would have to explain way too much to them.
A few years back I dived in to men’s mental health on youtube. My husband and I were in a rough patch and I just wanted to see some content created by men to maybe reach/understand him better.
the aglo went… bananas. I couldnt believe how fast shit went to a scary and innapropriate place. Nothinh was helpful in tje end.
As with dating apps, if the mental health recommendations actually worked then engagement would go down. I doubt they even need a human putting their thumb on the scales; the algorithm optimizes engagement in whatever way it needs to.
I started watching a lot of home-improvement type videos on YouTube, and suddenly since then all the ads now assume my dick is horribly bent and doesn’t work, and that I uncontrollably shit and piss myself.

Don’t tolerate ads
There isn’t a single device in my house that shows Youtube ads anymore. Firestick, my phone, my PC, nothing.
I also watch a lot of home improvement videos on YouTube, and I’ve never seen one of these ads that you speak of. I think there may be some sort of cross-watching or other things going on in your life that you are either unaware of or unwilling to admit on the internet…
yeah, yt music sucks now. Honestly I should just switch back to having local media.
