I can hardly think of worse ways to die, having all the time in the world to think it through on the way up listening to the “click-clack-click-clack” of the train on the rails, and then going over the falls… Maybe drowning and burning but that’s about what I can come up with.

    book spoilers ish

How High We Go in the Dark by Sequoia Nagamatsu talks about this in one of the chapters. A disease is killing children so an amusement park was created for children to enjoy a roller coaster ride instead of dying in a hospital bed.

I read The Road by Cormac McCarthy when I was like 22 and it sent me into a decade long depression I never really recovered from.

So I think I’ll pass. Good tip tho.

Hey even The Road ended on a happy note.

After all that hardship and horror, the poor starving child was rescued and lived happily ever after with a family on a boat and they just sailed the white blue oceans as free as the sun.

My interpretation is that McCarthy was saying, yeah, this will happen, this has happened, and here’s your happy ending so you don’t slit your wrists after reading this.

              The End.

Highly inefficient killing machine. It’s like they’re trying to avoid killing its passengers but failing. This failed as an euthanasia machine at the planning stage.

      It’s just physics people.

Enough Gs and your brain and internal organs smush into mush, and I’m not talking Warren Gs.

The ride’s seven inversions would inflict 10 g (g-force) on its passengers for 60 seconds, causing g-force related symptoms starting with greyout through tunnel vision to syncope, and eventually g-LOC (g-force induced loss of consciousness) and death.

    But

According to the National Institutes of Health, the human brain can survive without oxygen for up to four or five minutes. During this time, the brain is not capable of functioning at anything near its normal capacity. Extensive and irreversible brain damage may occur through cell death if oxygen levels are not restored quickly enough after this period.

    What am I missing?

G-force taking the blood out of the brain.

If a person suddenly stops breathing there is still oxygen in their blood that their brain can utilize. However with strong g-forces the blood can be displaced out of the brain entirely. Think about where the feet will be on the coaster and where the blood would be pushed to.

Presumably they would be clinically dead at the end of the ride, that is they would have stopped breathing and their heart would have stopped beating. It may still be possible to revive someone with prompt medical attention, but for the job to be finished all you’d have to do at that point is nothing.

Why would it not be easier to just seal off a room, and cycle the oxygen out until it’s pure nitrogen gas. The people would pass out quickly, experience no real physical pain and just leave them in their for 30 minutes (well more than needed)

If there was an assisted suicide way to go, id basically just ask for the mask at the orthodontist then ease off into never worrying again.

im not sure about the mask. maybe a helmet. you really want no chance of polluting with outside air. Also good if its not to constraining.

I mean when the doctor puts you under he uses a mask for a little until you’re out really and takes it off so you dont get brain damage and die, if he just left it on i dont see how it would stop working unless it ran out? Maybe I’m remembering something else

Sure but it gets taped down and such when your under and you are not worried about air getting in as much as so much aneshteia getting out that it will be to low a dosage. With nitrogen you don’t want oxygen extending out your awareness or triggers from soemthing like co2. You more worried about it getting in. Then also it just gets to a level of being tussed up which can wierd you out. I mean if you had to but I think the coffin/pod thing is a good compromise of comfort and being able to feel ate ease along with assurance on function.

Yeah – that’s not how the gas chambers worked. They used Zyklon B, which was designed to be painful (or at least a welcome coincidence).

10gs for 60 seconds would probably not be long enough to kill most of your passengers, especially if they had training or just decent cardiovascular system.

People can sustain 10g for around a minute before they g-loc. If you G-loc around a minute or 45 sec as soon as G force drop below a certain point you start to recover. You would have to extend the time after you G-loc to go on for 4-6 minutes.

The dude has a masters in physics. I’m pretty sure he did the math and that that’s enough to kill a man.

It will drain the blood completely out of your brain until it stops functioning permanently. It will also cause irreparable trauma to your organs.

That’s what the smaller circles are for. You need to see it in 3D, the loops aren’t linear, they will trail off into a spiral, away from the “viewer” (or towards, depending which side you choose to see it from).

It’s sustained 10G over 60 seconds, through seven inversions.

      It’ll kill you for sure.

The dude has a masters in physics. I’m pretty sure he did the math and that that’s enough to kill a man.

Just because you are a master of physics does not mean you are a master of physiology…

It will drain the blood completely out of your brain until it stops functioning permanently. It will also cause irreparable trauma to your organs.

10G is not enough to completely drain your brain of blood, nor is it enough to cause irreparable harm to your organs for a healthy adult.

For positive or upward g force we are pretty tolerant, though you will definitely G-loc, but G-loc isn’t really that harmful if it isn’t something that’s happening frequently.

“The human body is flexible and deformable, particularly the softer tissues. A hard slap on the face may briefly impose hundreds of g locally but not produce any real damage; a constant 16 g for a minute, however, may be deadly.”

For negative vertical g force we are much less tolerant, and is much more damaging to the body. That is when blood is forced to your head instead of you feet.

“Resistance to “negative” or “downward” g, which drives blood to the head, is much lower. This limit is typically in the −2 to −3 g0 (−20 to −29 m/s2) range. This condition is sometimes referred to as red out where vision is literally reddened[11] due to the blood-laden lower eyelid being pulled into the field of vision.[12] Negative g-force is generally unpleasant and can cause damage. Blood vessels in the eyes or brain may swell or burst under the increased blood pressure, resulting in degraded sight or even blindness.”

For horizontal g forces we are quite tolerant.

“Early experiments showed that untrained humans were able to tolerate a range of accelerations depending on the time of exposure. This ranged from as much as 20 g for less than 10 seconds, to 10 g for 1 minute, and 6 g0 for 10 minutes for both eyeballs in and out. These forces were endured with cognitive facilities intact, as subjects were able to perform simple physical and communication tasks. The tests were determined not to cause long- or short-term harm although tolerance was quite subjective, with only the most motivated non-pilots capable of completing tests”

My father used to teach aeronautical physiology when he was in the Air Force and then for FAA when he retired from the military. He operated the centrifuge at Holloman AFB for 5 years when we were stationed in New Mexico. Sustained 10g won’t be fun, and you will probably G-loc and shit your pants, but it wouldn’t kill the average person unless they were negative gs, and that isnt happening from hypoxia, nor isn’t a pleasant or fun way to go.
