My guess is that they deliberately chose not to portray any existing culture so as to not offend them by getting something wrong on screen. Also allows them to come up with whatever the plot needs. However, by doing so, they can’t help but mildly offend all native American cultures by simply ignoring their existence.

Unfortunately, they hired a known fraud. Jamake Highwater was exposed in the 80’s, but brought on board in the 90’s. Not a good look.
