along with the strong censoring that has occurred on reddit throughout the years, they have now removed r/all from the app and while using a desktop/laptop browser. instead of being able to stumble upon new subreddits you never knew existed, it wants to curate what you’re allowed to see
This is the reason I am trying Lemmy. I just want some un-algorithmatized internet please. Not sure if this is it yet.
Same here!
Although i’ve been trying out Mirage a lot also and been enjoying it. Got banned on Reddit a few weeks back. Seeking a new home. Have been on Mirage since that but thought i’d try it out here too!
I prefer lemmy more than reddit. My biggest complaint is Lemmy can be a bit of an echo chamber, but idk if there’s anywhere I can go that isn’t
I think echo chamber is the wring word here so much as humans naturally gravitate into communities and tribes.
In fact, that was the exact appeal of reddit and Lemmy now. People could foster communities and find likeminded people.
Survival by the numbers exceeds the fittest.
One advantage Lemmy has for now is that it isn’t under the same corporatisation Reddit fell under… for now.
I dont have a problem with like minded people. However the echo chamber is the word I meant. Valid criticisms of the popular belief are often downvoted or dismissed. Misinformation is more likely to spread without correction. Sensationalized article titles are likely to be taken at face value without reading even the first paragraph of the article, let alone different spurces of information. People will dog pile and agree with something that isn’t even true because it aligns with their existing beliefs. I recognize that’s human nature, but that’s why it’s important to not be so echoey
misinformation is more likely to spread without correction
This hasn’t been my experience on Lemmy at all. Misinformation here is usually called out in the first comment, which is counter to what I’ve seen on Reddit, Facebook, twitter, etc. where people are more interested in making funny quips than actually engaging with the topic.
My experience with Reddit has been no different though. I don’t think that is a Lemmy issue but a broader social media issue.
Edit: Looking back at your initial comment, I see that you made this exact point.
do you like it so far?
I like it, but I could do without the ugly ad banner at the bottom. One thing Reddit does right is its ads.nvmThat sounds like your Lemmy client/app, not Lemmy itself.
Lol you’re probably right. My bad
Ads? What ads? Reddit ads are horrible
I switched to the Voyager app because the first one I tried did that. Voyager has been great so far. I’ve only been actively on Lemmy for a couple of weeks now but I like it.
I’ll try it out. I tried out a few and liked Boost the best, but I can’t remember which ones I tried if I’m honest.
I don’t have that in Voyager. Maybe try a few other apps and see what speaks to you.
Reddit was good for niche subjects (certain type of workout, specific sports team), but the overall page became intolerable. I opened it the other day for the first time in a month and didn’t enjoy being fed content and realizing how much of the interaction is just bots.
Lemmy is quieter, and you’ll get fewer responses. However, the responses you get are generally thoughtful and more likely to lead to a functional conversation. Quality over quantity in my experience so far
Never heard of Voyager, i’ll check it out.
Was banned on Reddit a few weeks ago and have been trying out Mirage since that but thought i’d give it a go on here also. Can’t lie though I don’t like the fact I had to hand over my email to get on here. Almost stopped me from going ahead with it. Mirage asked for nada. Prefer it that way. But still keen to see what it’s like here too!
I’ve been banned twice this week (so far).
One for pointing out there will be a rise in terrorism against the US for their actions in the middle east.
Another one for saying Pam Bondi is such a hated public figure she’s never going to be safe in public again.
Neither of these comments violate any rules. They are not calls to violence.
I know how to circumvent Reddit’s methods for keeping banned users off their platform and I know how to check if I’ve been shadowbanned. Most people don’t. So they’re undoubtedly bleeding users at this point due to their automated bot banning garbage. People must be getting auto-banned left and right for things that are clearly not violating policy. And those people aren’t going to come back. I know how to come back and I’m almost done with putting the minimal effort into it.
Reddit is crashing HARD. And I’m totally into it.
It’s actually really hard to come back.
I tried a number of ways, but they have always detected me within hours
But aside from using a completely fresh device ,a good vpn, and making entirely new emails …they will detect you right away
I’ve been banned so many times over there. And I’m not saying this as if I’ve ever done anything to try to be banned over there. The vast majority of the time when I have been banned it’s been because the moderators of certain subs COMPLETELY misinterpreted what I had been trying to say and banned me and then when I contacted them to try to explain the misunderstanding they’ve refused to accept that there was actually a misunderstanding.
Some VERY popular subs have really bad moderators.
im somewhat surprised they dint shadowban you. they were purging and shadowbanning all last year, they mustve stepped back on that after realizing they were losing too many irl users. now its just mostly BOTS, or propaganda.
I had 12 years on reddit, started catching bans (maybe 1 was legit, and I mean maybe), but after the last one, I deleted. They even gave me a space to put “fuck reddit, fuck spez” for my parting message, and I meant it from the bottom of my heart.
I know how to circumvent Reddit’s methods for keeping banned users off their platform and I know how to check if I’ve been shadowbanned. Most people don’t.
Bro can you tell me please 🥺
It’s easy to get banned from subs, but it’s very hard to get banned from Reddit as a site. You have to go out of your way to either be extremely bigoted, obnoxious, or do something illegal for that to happen.
Actually you can get banned for being too good at accumulating karma
I got a sitewide ban for bot like behavior
I got my account and all my alts permabanned site-wide for calling someone “A fucking piece of human garbage” because they advocated for not only that Trans people don’t deserve rights but doesn’t care if they kill themselves, calling it “a good thing”.
So my account got banned. My porn alt which never got even a warning since I made it years ago? Banned. I make a new account now and so much as upvote a post on a subreddit I’ve never seen in my life? Instantly and automatically permabanned.
So if calling someone a piece of garbage for advocating for the violence and death of trans people, according to you, is “extremely bigoted, obnoxious, or something illegal”, maybe you might need a little introspective thought about your own reality.
Or you’re the bigoted and obnoxious person that doesn’t get banned from reddit for spouting hate. Because I went back and checked a week after I was permabanned before deleting the account? The user who advocated for Trans people to die was still commenting days later. Didn’t receive a single day.
But keep defending Reddit.
Mine was for wishing nightmares of children dying on someone justifying Israel targeting hospitals and schools.
Reddit shouldn’t be defended on this topic.
I called Tim Walz a “spineless fuck” for saying that he would never seek elected office again. Banned from a sub I was active in daily. Apparently you can’t have opinions on public figures if there are bad words involved.
That’s a sub. Not all of reddit.
I get it, but it was still annoying. Straight to perma ban. I tried to appeal it, pointing out that I had broken no rules and they just muted me. I legitimately don’t think anyone reported my comment, just some mod who likes the guy decided to ban me. It was horseshit.
Naw the auto bans are site wide. If you have a few of the auto bans it permas you. As he mentioned the auto bans trigger on non rule breaking comments mostly in relation to the idea of violence. And the appeals process is absolute shit. I said something like “you can’t just punch a person in the face if you don’t like what they say” and got the auto ban (and perma because I had been banned before for similar). I appealed and got a response saying it had been reviewed and my comment was not rule breaking. My perma ban didn’t go away and so I appealed again and my ban request got denied even though the reason for my ban was overturned. Reddit just wants happy positive and capitalism promoting content tbh.
I made a joke about how if everyone says that cats are invasive species and should never be let outside, we should do the same with white people.
Banned in seconds. Is my joke terribly funny? Eh, marginal at best. Is it that offensive? Maybe only if you’re extraordinarily thin skinned.
Poe’s Law. There are always too many people who will take it seriously and act in “retaliation”. If they think someone is at all likely to use what you said as a justification for stochastic violence, they will bend over backwards to interpret it as uncharitably as possible.
Because they’re stupid and they suck.
FWIW I like the joke. White people are indeed an invasive species, and my ethnicity is one of the ones labeled “white” so I would be detained too. By all means, send me to Poland. Force Europe to accept me as a citizen on the basis of my ancestry. The funny part is that I’ve said something of a similar nature in the past. Nobody cared about the white people part, but OMG did they get up in arms that I let my cat outside. You want to rustle some jimmies, tell someone that your cat ate a bird. The pitchforks and torches are coming…
It’s not hard to get a permaban from Reddit, especially if you’re pro-Palestine.
I got banned for posting combat footage of Hamas attacking IDF soldiers in Gaza to r/combatfootage The reason cited was spread to terrorist propaganda video. Reddit wide ban with no recourse followed.
There were times, when you could still post primary sources on Reddit. It’s no longer possible.
Like 90% of the site is pro Palestine, what are you talking about?
Dude, you’re on Lemmy, not Reddit.
Take your ass back to the sinking ship.
On Reddit?
Hahahahahahahahahaha
You have to go out of your way to find subs that are pro Israel. The only major ones that I can think of are mapporn and worldnews.
Reddit’s AI moderation has been ruthless as of late. Comments that are anti-Israel are heavily moderated and yes, there have been a lot of users permabanned because of their political takes on this subject.
I got perma banned for saying I hope the US and China burn each other down in their economic war.
I got a 3 day ban for saying Iran’s elementary schools were being bombed in response to someone claiming that only the IRGC were targeted. Not exactly extreme.
Like replying to a Muslim woman that I thought her rationale that the bloke who disarmed one of those Bondi shooters and didn’t use it on him was because of his interpretation that his religion is one of peace?
That’s what I got permabanned for. Which one is that, extremely bigoted, obnoxious or illegal?
I mean it’s not, but I was just making the point that often times the people who complain about getting banned are usually justifiably banned for doing things like calling for violence or being racist or trying to do something malicious. That doesn’t there aren’t exceptions.
There’s a lot of exceptions.
Way too many. I’d be reluctant to claim the numbers are in favour of genuine cases unless I knew better.
Didn’t seem that hard to me. 16 year old account. Poof. I was pretty careful and certainly didn’t advocate for violence although I did point out that violence was likely.
Reddit is censored and bottled so as to be a propaganda machine. It got too popular. As the go to it was inevitable that the powers that be would co-opt the platform into an American propaganda tool. It’s blatantly obvious too.
I got 2 sub bans for participating in subs the mods didn’t like.
Then a week ago I got banned for promoting self harm. I did not, ai had a false positive, but they still haven’t responded to my appeal. I guess I’m kicked out for good.
It’s easy to get banned from subs, but it’s very hard to get banned from Reddit as a site.
Not really. I didn’t tone down what I said in my previous comment. The two things I got banned for this week are exactly what I said in my comment above. Very short comments not violating any rules. Banned.
I also determined they’re handing out auto-bans for certain word combinations. I had a few accounts banned for mentioning the “2nd amendment” coupled with a few other terms in the same comment. Was very careful not to violate any actual site rules, especially after the first ban involving those words. I was pretty sure about this after a few bans, then I saw a whole comment chain of people talking about it as well and that confirmed my theory.
My last shadowban was a comment that literally just said “Mussolini and Gaddafi”. That’s it. Shadowbanned. You can always tell you’ve been shadowbanned cuz it’ll start telling you that you have to wait between posting comments. Then you can go to Reddit’s appeal page and if you can appeal, it means you’ve been shadowbanned. Or you can use the 3rd party shadowban checker website. And obviously your comments will stop being upvoted/downvoted or commented on because no one can see them.
And it’s not like they’re catching up to me a day or two later and determining I circumvented their bans. Some of my accounts last months and months. They always all get banned based on a single comment.
Nah. Reddit is going full shitshow and supporting the rise of fascism in America by censoring users who aren’t even breaking rules. If you’ve been on Reddit long enough, you know the leadership is awful and they’ve been consistently making bad decisions for the platform for years now.
I’ve always said it and I’ll keep saying it. It’s their platform and they can run it like they want. But I believe the “Front Page Of The Internet” has a responsibility that extends beyond themselves. And, of course, if they choose to keep making shitty decisions, they’re going to keep losing users and we’ll keep seeing an increase in Lemmy activity.
You have to go out of your way to either be extremely bigoted
looks at all the alt-right subs and the fascist users
Uhhhh…
Reddit and Microsoft, competing for the most anti consumer moves in a day. Hope they both lose their market shares.
Reddit is not dying fast enough
For me it was the bots, rage-bait and doxing. I hope Lemmy stays niche, cuz’ in my experience - popularity = trash community.
Celebrity worship(or worship in general) is always my stopping point. 9/10 posts on reddit now are meme with, or posts about some actor.
rage baiting on here is exploding. world news and news community are like 75% rage bait with editorialized headline nonsense the past month. and it gets tons of commentary, and if you point out the editorializing and the lies you get downvoted or reported by the delsuional nutbags.
shit’s wild.
You get downvoted and reported because of your extreme views on women and your petulant whining about how your “facts” about Israel make people think you’re a Zionist.
Hasbara ass account
This comment ironically proves his point
if you point out the editorializing and the lies you get downvoted or reported by the delsuional nutbags.
Do posters here editorialize things to make women appear better than what you and @[email protected] believe them to be?
Is it only delusional nutbags that think women are not a monolith and shouldn’t be cast as money-grubbing whores?
Then so be it if my comment proves his point. It should happen more often on this site. The incels are frothing at the mouth here.
If you had a sliver of self awareness, you’ll see why you’re proving his point. But you don’t and you won’t, so you’ll continue making up stuff about me, this further demonstrating the spirit of his claim.
Oh no, you’ve cut me to my core with this comment! I’m devastated that Zionists might find my feminism threatening and they might feel censored by being called out for their bad takes!
Lol you’re lost
extreme views on women
So he has a hot take that men and women might be biologically different, or what?
No, he spews ideas like women are only interested in designer bags and using men.
Just click on his name (it’s that blue thingy above the comment thingy) and read his comments for yourself.
I was banned from News, and blocking it was the best thing that’s happened to Lemmy. My All feed went from 7/38 Trump posts to 1 out 38 Trump posts.
The high frequency of simple two sentence comments like, “I bet MAGA is sad right now. XD. Those subhuman conerva-stupids are getting what they deserve,” suggests that the perceived popularity might not be real.
I think this platform would become more popular if political subreddits weren’t automatically included in the All feed. There aren’t enough people to dilute the propoganda. It gives a bad first impression.
I just unsubscribed to News myself for the same reason. I do like keeping up with what’s going on in the world, but what gets posted is WAY too much politics. It brings in the negativity, and in your opinion that negativity spreads. I read a thread the other day about the Artemis launch and the top comments were all negative. It takes me not want to post or engage.
I’m going to start browsing only subscribed communities and see if that is any different.
It is somewhat sad to see slow death of such old platform.
I’m OK with it at this point. Its run its course.
Imagine if only Reddit wasn’t a US company and had more chances of surviving the total eshittification happening in the whole country.
I’m imagining Lemmy.
some of the illicit subs back when they were banning these subs, moved onto forums, or obscure sites. those communities died because they are too scattered now.
They did it to themselves. Poor management.
It was always going this way when IPO was announced
They pulled that plug for me. Ain’t no way I’m taking off the internet condom, especially for them.
Nothing lasts forever.
If nothing lasts forever then the Fediverse will also have its downfall.
It surely will.
Oops! All ads
Intention driven media consumption is getting killed everywhere.
YouTube hides your subscriptions from you, the public broadcasting institutions from my country recently netflixified the experience (they try to tell you what you want to watch).
It’s so stupid.
I had to revive RSS for myself to overcome this. My feed, my decisions!
i dont bother logging in at all for youtube. only in a rare instances for certain videos.
YouTube hides your subscriptions from you
How do you mean?
Perhaps they’re referring to how YT will overwhelm the Home feed with tons of suggested crap and a few videos from your subscribed channels, instead of the other way around. You can click over to a subscription-only feed, but it’s not the default.
Hmm… Fair enough, I wouldn’t know because I have history turned off so I don’t get a Home feed, I only use the Subscriptions view. That being said - wasn’t the Home feed always supposed to be mostly for discovery?
It will be a slow and painful death. I abandoned Reddit last year because enshittification. However, some great stuff from there lands here in Lemmy.and my search engine seems to like Reddit info. Not going back, but sentimental thoughts exist.
This is the straw that killed the cammels back for me. 15 year old account deleted.
For me, the sickness started with forced introduction of the new interface. It was so horrible I just switched to old in the settings.
Imagine what happened? Reddit unchecked that setting for me every fucking month on purpose. Hole fuck this is disrespectful. Also, they replaced direct messages with chat that spams neverending crypto scams at me.
And on top of that majority of big subs are moderated by the same people with iron grip on “truth”
powermods, it was reported on another forum that there were 92 MODS that controlled 500+ subreddits. of course everone favorite"r/conservatives’ are controlled by actual russian backed people
I quit when they killed RiF. The Reddit app was unusable to me. I also exclusively used old interface on PC.
But Reddit downfall was fortuitous for me, I was doom scrolling way too much and it was having a toll on my mental health.
Lemmy is too slow moving for that. Theres only so many times I can scroll past the same SMCF post before I have to put the phone down, go outside and touch the grass
Year of Desktop Lemmy
Mods here removed a quote from tropic thunder to describe Reddit.
Unfortunately the types of people that moderate community forms are overly sensitive losers and the word for slow in French.
This was a problem on reddit and is a problem here. The cancer that started there will recur as long as we have unaccountable unelected basement dwellers that want to play hall monitor online and can’t get laid.
Fuck reddit. Fuck powertripping mods. Fuck hall monitor nerds that put their thumb on the scales of open dialogue on forums.
I get that it’s a quote, one that many people find funny, but it is also rooted in ableism and hasn’t exactly aged super well. It’s not like your comment was removed for “wrongthink,” it was removed for violating a social norm that has evolved since that movie came out. Just my two cents. 🤷♀️
“Ableism” I stopped reading here. I’m so tired of you armchair activists and your bullshit. Get a job. If someone says something you don’t like, get over it!
If you want to be an edgelord, be one and stop whining about people’s reactions to you.
Isn’t that exactly what you’re looking for when using terms like that? Outrage?
Please go back to the hugzone discord or safe space you came from. Folks like you are why we can’t have nice things and why any kind of progressivism gets killed in the crib. You make dialogue impossible by censoring and sterilize all public spaces by banning humor. Nobody wants to associate with a bunch of losers that police language and “tone” on an internet forum.
With all due respect, don’t comment if you have nothing to say. There are plenty of places to talk in circles with your leftist gobbledygook bullshit elsewhere.
Full disclosure I’m disabled or whatever so please take that into consideration when you consult your progressive victim rubric to determine where my thought should be placed on the totem pole
Folks like you are why we can’t have nice things and why any kind of progressivism gets killed in the crib.
You’re arguing to be able to use the word “retard”. Let’s be for fucking real here.

Do you know what “ableism” means? Like, have you ever stopped to think about it? Can you define it?
Ableism is when the government won’t build a ramp for a people with a wheelchair, so they can access the town hall.
Or when they do build a ramp, but it’s too steep to get up to (pardon the reddit - I couldn’t find an alternative)
Calling people who act retarded, retarded, isn’t ableism.
Yeah it was made up by a bunch of childless 30 something-year-old women that needed something to complain about
So no.
Censoring the free exchange of ideas and information because someone may be offended by a word on the screen is the dumbest thing I have ever heard in my life.
You’re going to lose this every time. People have had enough of this pearl clutching Nanny State bullshit. Nobody wants to associate with people who do this or who advocate for this idiocy.
The irony of this is that OPs name is literally “bong hits for Jesus.” Are you familiar with that story?
Spoken like a true MAGA supporter.
I worked and voted for Bernie twice. Nice try. You’re the problem and exactly why this word is used
Plenty of Bernie bros went MAGA
You’re a child. Go back to Reddit please
So clever, dude. I’m shaking in my boots at your colorful and intelligent commentary. I’m so amazed.
“I’m not a MAGAt, I’ll have you knooooow I’m a proud liberal ;)” Cringe.
Not an argument. Misrepresent my position that you don’t know to begin with and is in fact the opposite. Nice. Sick. Read about the straw man fallacy, you argue like a child
You are having a freakout in this thread dude, take a break. Won’t respond to anything else from this cringelord.
whose social norm?
this is the issue. you assume your social norms are shared by everyone. they aren’t. and then mods and such impose their social norms on everyone else rather than let the users decide what content they want to see.
i watched it happen countless times. community is pretty chill, but then a mod comes in and starts banning people who have been here for months/years over word choices or ‘tone’ or other petty nonsense because they want the community to only reflect their own personal norms and beliefs.
in real life you can go from town to town and the details of the norms and language change, that’s what’s normal. in some towns saying some words in heinous, in others, nobody cares.
it also doesn’t take into account the concept of context, which again, doesn’t exist for the sensitivity police who think all words mean the same things at all times and therefore must be banned from existence. let alone experiences, beliefs, or all the other things that actually make a community genuine diverse and interesting. the sensitivity police want to stamp out genuine diversity and create some weird linguistic police state nonsense where only certain things are permitted.
let alone experiences, beliefs, or all the other things that actually make a community genuine diverse and interesting.
Does one really have to use the word “retard” to make a community diverse and interesting though?
There are 2 broad categories of social contract. “Everything which is not forbidden is allowed”, and “Everything which is not allowed is forbidden”. Most modern societies hew to the former.
Demanding a justification for use of a word is the latter. Demanding a justification for it’s ban is the former.
“Does one really have to ban the use of the word “retard” to make a community diverse and interesting?” is a more reasonable question. And since you just used the word, you should be against it’s blanket ban.
The hard truth of it is we can’t reduce the social contract down to mechanistic rules. It fails at both allowing reasonable speech and stopping unreasonable people. You can’t encode “don’t be a jerk” into rules, it takes judgement to see if someone is being disruptive to a community.
Using ableist terminology in quoting a dated joke is more than just “tone.” Everyone should feel welcome on Lemmy, including people with intellectual disability. That type of language marginalizes such people and has moved into being unacceptable. This isn’t stamping out diversity, it’s protecting it.
The logic here is pretty clear, it isn’t just someone randomly playing weird linguistic police. I totally get where you’re coming from, and I agree with you in principle, but I also feel like this particular case is just not the hill to die on.
Tell me more you live in a white college-educated liberal/leftie bubble, and think anyone who doesn’t share your viewpoints is ‘less than’ you.
It’s not about logic. It’s about you waking up the fact you don’t get to dictate how other people live their lives or how they speak, and your need to do that is nothing more than a power-tripping projection. And that you ‘welcoming to everyone’ necessary excludes people and is inherently contradictory based on arbitrary perceptions of language use, articulated by you, how views yourself as the dominant social group, and your instance that you ‘speak on behalf’ of those who you view as inherently less than you, that you must ‘protect’. I also notice these types of folks are self-appointed protectors. I doubt anyone asked you personally to go on the internet and start protecting them from certain words there.
That’s why this type of identity political nonsense pisses most people off, because it’s inherently contradictory on it’s own terms. And it’s typically welded by wannabe bullies who want to browbeat and power trip rather than genuinely create diverse communities and interesting communities. The inherent contradiction is why they use this ‘protect people’ justification all the time.
Further, I see words and things I disagree with all the time. But it’s not my place to ban or dictate to others how to speak or or force my views on them. I simple choose not to interact with them, but I am not so cowardly to think I can silence away their existence because it find it upsetting or find it offensive. Just like in real life, I don’t go up to people having a conversation that I find offensive and try to ‘educate’ them about how wrong they are, or tell someone off for wearing clothing I find offputting. Because I respect other people’s agency and freedom far more than respect my internal feelings of disgust and dislike.
Also why I don’t go into a Mosque and start trying to convert people there to Christianity… because I respect that they are different than me, and have practices and beliefs that are different than mine and oftentimes contradict mine. And they have such as might right to practice and speak as I do.
But if they start trying to covert me, yeah I’ll tell them to properly fuck off. Just like they should tell me to fuck off if I try to covert them. And that is what creates diversity and inclusion… respect for differences and the choice to participate.
Further, I see words and things I disagree with all the time. But it’s not my place to ban or dictate to others how to speak or or force my views on them.
Are you not doing this exact thing right now?
It’s not about logic. It’s about you waking up the fact you don’t get to dictate how other people live their lives or how they speak, and your need to do that is nothing more than a power-tripping projection.
Oh dude, I grew up on 4chan. I don’t personally give a single crap how you talk, I’m just saying why it is how it is. I have no desire to control your speech whatsoever.
That’s why this type of identity political nonsense pisses most people off
Pretty sure most people understand the reasoning and move on with their lives.
Anyway, I’m gonna leave you with this and dip now.
i love this. every time your ‘camp’ is confronted you just ‘dip’ and drop some link to Popper like you’re dropping the mic and you’re some genius.
You don’t even understand Popper if you are using him here. Internet posts aren’t political speech. Popper’s argument is about political speech, not random people in in a coffee shop talking. But your camp can’t draw these distinctions between personal and political behaviors, because that’s too ‘difficult’ for you to understand. You also can’t understand context, or jokes, or the difference between your own feelings and the existence of the external world, half the time.
It’s also why you lose elections and the left is a joke politically. Because you can’t fight, you just run and hide, and wonder why the right beats the piss out of you in terms of social popularity and traction. Because they do fight. They don’t hide beside wikipedia links, and they try to reach people where they are rather than lecturing them from on high about how stupid and ignorant they are.
Would be nice to meet a leftist who actually stood for something other than being a pedantic hall monitor on the internet. But I notice when those leftists show up, all the other leftists just call them names because the idea of having a backbone and respecting other people’s differences, including linguistic differences, is SCARY to them. Lemmy leftists are always such total cowards.
I hope your day gets better.
So, where the hell do you want to draw the lines, and why does that location not make you a product of exactly what you’re accusing everyone else of?
I only draw lines for myself. I am not arrogant to claim to speak for anyone else.
I also draw the lines based on context of the existing community, god forbid!
If you don’t like certain words, cool, don’t interact go go to places that allow them. But the issue is your need to impose your personal beliefs on others who don’t share them, and don’t want to share them.
Should I go into a black barber shop and start informing the community there how racist/ableist/sexist they all are based on their language use? Or would that just make me the racist?
From where I stand, that would make me the racist POS if I did that. Trying to impose my bullshit on other people who never asked for it, who don’t want it, and think it’s total bullshit. Maybe I should go into the barber shop and ‘educate’ all those ‘ignorant’ black men about bell hooks!!! Clearly that will ‘fix’ their ignorance!!
I only draw lines for myself.
Yet here you are telling people where they’re not allowed to draw lines for others.
I am not arrogant to claim to speak for anyone else.
this is the issue. you assume your social norms are shared by everyone. they aren’t. and then mods and such impose their social norms on everyone else rather than let the users decide what content they want to see.
That’s you, speaking for everyone else.
Trying to impose my bullshit on other people who never asked for it,
nobody asked for what you’re saying now.
You’re literally trying to define the social norm while telling eveyone else they should not get to pick the social norm.
Advocating for eveyrone to refuse to censor anything is same trap as advocating for people to censor things.
And there will always be lines. Gonna block outright harassment? Gonna block kiddie pics, Gonna block a bunch of people organizing how to cut the power to a town, kill people, get away with murder?
every response you made here was ‘no but u’
This is why decent folk don’t respect your viewpoint. Because you can’t defend it without calling peoples names and resorting to toddler level replies, and misconstruing everything someone else says deliberately.
I am not defining anything for anyone else. I am speaking for myself. Your entire blindness to this fact is so telling. You literally can’t distinguish between a personal view and a social view, because for you there is no distinction. Hence you feel you personal feelings are the business of society, and society has to be built to protect your personal feelings.
I notice a lot of people like you also can’t seem to distinguish between the external world and your own internal thoughts, and seem to think that isn’t a personal problem of your own, but a problem the ‘society’ is suppose to solve for you. Other people’s realities dont’ exist for you, you want to erase them and create a friction-less world that only ever reflects your own image, and nobody who upsets you is allowed to exist in it.
This is why decent folk don’t respect your viewpoint. Because you can’t defend it without calling peoples names and resorting to toddler level replies, and misconstruing everything someone else says deliberately.
Are we reading the same thing? Are you ok? Have you hit your head?
It was a social norm to call black people the N word for generations… Social norms do not define good or bad behavior. They define what people find acceptable. Socially, the word you wish to be acceptable has made more and more people uncomfortable and has in fact become less and less socially acceptable to use casually. Many words you used to use are weird now. Growing up we used to say “frick” unironically. These days it would be a little strange to toss that in as a filler word. It’s the same concept except for the fact that the word has not become a slur, it’s just been outdated in its use.
Language evolves and words become acceptable and others become unacceptable. It’s the way it goes and is not a sign of sensitivity, instead a positive sign of progression of language. You are fighting against the nature of how language develops.
Language changes, it doesn’t ‘progress’. Lots of new racist and discriminatory terms now exist that didn’t years ago, many of which are totally acceptable because they are new and not ‘weird’.
But keep insisting that your language use is the only ‘correct’ one, I guess? It must make you feel big since you ‘know’ the ‘right’ language use. You should go around and ‘educate’ everyone you see on the street about it. See how well that goes over.
Oh, you’re mad that you can’t use a slur? That’s like, the powertripping? People leave reddit because of chuds like you hombre.
Edit: check his account, its a ragebot or something.
Language is an evolving, organic tool, and attempting to police it usually says more about the person doing the policing than the person speaking. When we start labeling certain verbiage as “correct” or “incorrect,” we aren’t actually protecting the language; we are just enforcing a personal or social preference.
Communication is about the transmission of ideas. If the message was received, the language did its job. Whether it was delivered with a academic precision or through “crass” slang is irrelevant to its functional success. Demanding that everyone adhere to a specific aesthetic or moral standard of speech is just a subtle way of trying to control how others express their reality. If you make certain words the enemy, you’re essentially arguing for a narrow, sterilized version of expression that leaves no room for the raw or the unconventional. It’s better to engage with the actual argument being made rather than retreating into the safety of tone policing.
Cool, could you say the n-word for all of us? To prove your “point.”
Threatening people with retribution doesn’t prove the moral authority of your argument.
you’re right but i don’t think he was threatening me, i think he’s just being difficult because nuance is scary
“Go ahead and act how I disagree with and see what happens to you” is an indirect threat.
And this is coming from someone who does not use slurs, and does not think others should. But trying to ban them is futile; the hate still exists and will be expressed otherwise even if you succeed.
There are SO MANY things that people shouldn’t do that it’s wrong to stop them from doing.
oh, you right.
trying to ban them is futile
as an author, slurs in dialogue are really handy. they’re intensely evocative phrases when spoken in anger or hate, and humanizing when spoken in jest. i just really hate it when someone goes on the internet to shoulder the plight of every ethnicity and creed and shouts on their assumed behalf, “no one should use mean words ever”
It is fun and easy to feel right by conflating the idea of expressive freedom with the usage of a specific racial slur laden with a unique history of systemic violence and dehumanization, hell yeah.
You said that the original commenter should be able to say slurs; say a slur.
Fuckin self-righteous chud nonsense, go suck yourself off somewhere else.
It’s not a slur. You are overly sensitive. You are the problem
Bigoted man believes others are sensitive because he can’t decide what is and is not a slur for everyone else. Beautiful.
Any word that expresses a negative connotation about a group becomes a slur over time. And then a new word is chosen, which becomes a slur eventually as well. I think trying to make ideas impossible to say by banning the words used to say them is futile.
Okay, so tell me the slurs you’re willing to say since you believe there ought to be no consequence to doing so.
You have no values dude, you’re just performing for yourself.
I don’t say slurs. It’s not nice.
That doesn’t mean I think trying to force others to behave like I do is moral or productive. (Or nice. A bit coercive.)
This should not be hard to understand. I also don’t drink, and would not ban booze.
Have you considered for once in your life that you aren’t qualified to make that judgement? As much as dorkass fake thinkers like you pretend to be objective in service of some other fake values (I wonder why you used the word productive as synonymous with “good” or “helpful” HMMMMMM), you never actually stop to think about what you say.
Maybe if a slur does not effect you, you don’t get to have a say in whether it is alright to say. The only consequence this fascist got was people online making fun of him. If you think that is a consequence equal to dehumanization, maybe you should just count your lucky stars for the simple life you’ve been afforded and shut the fuck up about things you don’t know about.
Won’t even read your response, it’s clear that you’re very self-satisfied along with being a bigot.
Did you just assume my gender identity?
Deduced it. Don’t be sensitive.
I wish Tumblr was still around so you could go back to it
Tumblr and Vine need to come back, so all the imbeciles can fuck back off to the containment sites.
Unfortunately the types of people that moderate community forms are overly sensitive losers and the word for slow in French.
Forum moderation corroded the human soul. It’s a thankless job that mostly involves policing the most perverse, belligerent, and degenerate people.
I’ve been on the internet a long time, without fail, moderation on forums and chat rooms turns into a twisted version of the Stanford prison experiment every single time.
The people that push for censorship and language policing enable this kind of behavior and make these moderators feel like they’re doing the right thing when they are acting like total authoritarians. I will call these idiots out every single time. Fuck them
The people that push for censorship and language policing enable this kind of behavior
One side of the coin.
The other is the guy that keeps making new accounts just to post FBI Crime Statistics, Stonetoss memes, and CSAM.
I will call these idiots out every single time.
Consider yourself called out
Crime stats and stone toss aren’t illegal, CSAM is.
Get a clue
What a crock of bullshit you just stated and total false equivalence
Didn’t they do the opposite of this before? Like, there were default subs, then that went away and replaced with All, right?
Yeah atheism was default for a long time i think?
That’s what convinced me to make an account.
Yeah I would not admit that, but you do you.
Admit to making a reddit account 15 years ago to filter out a toxic community full of rage comics flooding the frontpage?
Because that’s what we should be ashamed of.
Ah okay. Thought you meant you made a reddit account to subscribe to r/atheism. My bad.
Oh yeah - totally on the same page, then. That place was a toxic hellhole.
Initially there were no subs, then the main page got hidden behind /r/all and people were allowed to create their own subs, and the frontpage got replaced with whatever you subbed to.
Those were the good times, when the site was small enough that people helped a kid out to do his homework.
old.reddit.com/r/all still works. i can still hit r/all from the top of the old.reddit.com homepage
Ever since the election the site has steadily become more and more… off. Something changed, I wonder what it was?
well you see, they started waves of purges just after the election, at first it became quiet of propaganda, then we started noticing more and more users getting banned, and then starting last year, they were using AI to moderate the sub, which left with massive amount of people with multiple accounts getting banned(even if you havnt used those other accounts in months or years) the AI likely was connecting all the accounts together.
You can still compare how titles look with /popular vs old.reddot.com/r/all
Relevant topics were replaced with bot fueled shitty memes + socially important topics are much harder to find
