This whole thread is hilarious. I imagine it’s much like the early 1900s…

“I put up my ‘Never Automobiles’ sign, but they keep driving down the road! I hate automobiles. People are just too lazy to walk everywhere. Walking is better for the environment and it doesn’t give money to the corporations. I’m going to post ‘Never Automobiles’ on every corner of every street, until they’re all gone!”

125 years later… See the fuckcars community for their effectiveness.

Best part? People using AI to make free pics are hastening the bubble collapse. Altman said he was surprised to learn their new $200 tier customers were still not profitable. AI “art” and graphics are also winding up a hella backlash. Someday soon enough people will regard that whole style as unbelievably gauche.

Bring on the AI pics! I’m fine with all that. :)

I don’t think you understand the economics involved. Most of America’s GDP and stock market gains are tied up in AI. Total stock valuation vs. GDP (Buffett Index) is at 230%. It was 119% in 1929 and 2008. We’re looking at a planetary recession, at best. It won’t be the tech bros suffering.

Why use an AI image for the folding phone when they’re are literally tens of thousands of images of foldables elsewhere?

There is honestly no real justification for creating slop images for a meme or really anything. Last I checked, stock image companies or image copyrighters don’t file lawsuits against creators of memes for badly cropping a stock photo and putting text on top of it.

I took the first image from duckduckgo where the “no AI” filter is on. All the images I post are edited in GIMP alone, by my own untalented hands.

Fair enough honestly, it’s unfortunate how large of a pool of AI images aren’t labelled as such, and that the only feasible way to get them labelled after the fact is [at least in the case of duckduckgo,] to gather feedback data given by people who search and know that there is the “flag AI generated image” button.

I suppose indentifying AI images is easier said than done, and requires at training and good enough pattern recognition, so it doesn’t mean everyone has to become an expert at recognising them, it really means that these images are flooding everywhere and are a great reason to fervently oppose generative AI.

At this point, I’d say if you want to avoid AI images, you need to see enough of them to find what makes them look off, and with enough time it becomes second nature to discriminate images based on how real they appear.

Since we’re giving out advice: Your original comment was very quick to put me in the slop corner. I just want to shitpost, I’m on your side, and as you correctly assumed I don’t want to become an AI expert. Hanlon’s razor wouldn’t have hurt here.

they used an ai image instead of one of the thousands of actual product images

edit: it could be because op searched for “iphone fold” instead of “iphone duo”. The “iphone fold” results are full of AI / concept images. I don’t think there was a real Iphone duo in the first few results.

When searching for product images, this is the top result on duckduckgo with ai images disabled. Seems disabling ai images is useless…

Edit: correction, when you search for “iphone fold”, searching “iphone duo” yields correct images

Disabling ai images isn’t useless, it does filter out a large portion of ai images even though it is far from perfect.

But it’s not OPs fault. They chose a picture from a search with AI images filtered out.

I’ve had a folding phone for 3 years and I’ve never gotten sand in it, pocket or otherwise.

But I also don’t crack my screens on my phones.

I have one too. I’ve gotten all sorts of things inside the inner screen. Once I even accidentally closed it with a key in it (basically folded it while putting it in pocket where keys are). Realized only after arriving home and pulling out my phone with key in it. Dust, manufacturing materials (I work in a factory), ectera ectera.

What has saved me all this time is simply a nillkin case that has a hinge protector (dust, falls, etc.) and creates a small gap between the screens when you close, so whatever dust gets inside is never really pressed between the screens.

I went with OnePlus Open. Samsung had weird screen ratios and pixel was just meh in comparison.

A misspelling of etcetera, commonly abbreviated “etc.” which is Latin (“et cetera”) for “and others.”

If you want to be a douchey nerd you can pronounce it like it would’ve been in Ancient Rome, with a “k” sound for the c. It’s fun.

Which model did you get? I wanted one for some time now, but I really feel nervous about the screen just deciding to go the way of the dodo after 2 years and leaving me with a brick.

The original Pixel Fold. I didn’t like the dimensions of the Samsung ones closed and I didn’t really feel like importing an Oppo or something like that.

The camera died after a year and I had to get it replaced, but I had insurance, so it wasn’t a big deal. The screens still work like they’re new and the hinge is fine.

The sand is pressed harder against the screen if it’s being pressed by another screen than if it’s being pressed by the fabric of your pocket.

There is also a concern that sand can get in the hinge, and there are small gaps around the screen at the hinge so sand can actually get behind/under the screen

My non folding phone has some screen scratches from pocket sand. It’s the first phone in ages where this has been a problem.
