Avenue Q is more high-brow than this season of Strange New Worlds.
They really really want to tell holodeck stories but set their show canonically before holodecks.
Also didn’t want to tell “earth but xyz event happened” stories like TOS.
The Enterprise rec room had holodeck capabilities in TAS, but it wasn’t really mentioned how long that technology was in place. The characters certainly didn’t act like it was new technology at all. As I understand, SNW takes place just ten or so Earth years before TAS. Not a stretch to assume that technology existed then as well.
SNW had a holodeck episode last season: Space Adventure Hour. They said it was a new technology they were evaluating. By the end of the episode they decided it wasn’t ready for safe use yet.
Now I’m expecting a paintball episode in the current season of Strange New Worlds.
