Brandolini’s law (or the bullshit asymmetry principle) is an Internet adage coined in 2013 by Italian programmer Alberto Brandolini. It compares the considerable effort of debunking misinformation to the relative ease of creating it in the first place. The adage states:

The amount of energy needed to refute bullshit is an order of magnitude bigger than that needed to produce it.

The challenge of refuting bullshit does not come just from its time-consuming nature, but also from the challenge of defying and confronting one’s community.

This is only a thing because people forget or ignore the burden of Truth.

If you go against the accepted idea the onus is on you to prove why it’s true.

Next time someone comes at you with a stupid opinion, do what we did decades ago, and laugh in their fucking face.

    Make morons afraid again

This has been the case forever. Look at religion, “you can’t prove there isn’t a god”.

Not really. The accepted idea for most of human history is there is some kind of creator/deity. Also there are religions that reject deity worship or their importance and are still considered “religions”

You are right with all those facts. My point was that it’s religion’s responsibility to prove their beliefs. I can’t prove their is not a deity and I shouldn’t have to. It’s their responsibility to prove there is one. I can’t prove there is not a heaven, it’s their responsibility to prove there is one.

The trouble with a placebo is you have to half believe it might be working, so they don’t want to think too much about it, and get sad (expressed as anger) if you ask them to, in case you harsh their buzz / rain on their parade / piss on their chips etc.

? I’m confused… What does my post have to do with placebo? I know the placebo effect and how double blind studies work. But it has little to do with that statement that proving a claim should be the requirement instead of requiring proof of a negative.

If I claim you’re an armadillo, proof should be on me to provide evidence of you being an armadillo. You shouldn’t have to prove you are not one. Any claim on anything with no evidence to show it is true should be discarded.

It has nothing to do with placebo.

It’s the problem with something that relies on belief. They resent being asked to prove it because their own doubt may make it stop working. Generally religion is a mental health aid

ugh. I used to have this discussion with my wife. She would always be showing me youtube stuff and Im like. Look here is a few logical things that make this kinda dodgy but it will take me a fair amount of time to find out why it is. Sometimes I would do it but I had to basically put my foot down that she needs to learn to research. actually ones with good sources and not more youtube videos. of course you also need to do an elementary logic class and maybe clues by sam and sudkoko or such regularly.

That is a problem sadly also with the Internet. IRL where people can not change identity people develop raport but online this is not possible because a) the idiot just can create another account and b) the Internet is huge
