The calculus here isn’t strictly whether it’s “healthy” or not. There are quite a few ingredients that can be derived from both plants and petroleum, for example, and I would choose the one derived from plants every time

News@lemmy.world•Iran to completely close Hormuz if Trump executes threats on Iranian energy, Revolutionary Guards sayEnglish
111·2 days agoTrump assumes the IRGC are as dumb as him and the people he’s surrounded himself with, which is going to be catastrophic for how this goes for him. The IRGC are theocratic authoritarians who are not motivated by money, and he can’t conceive of this, so is clearly at a total loss as to how to handle the situation he has created

Many rivers begin with glaciers. The Colorado, Mississippi, and Rio Grande, for example, still receive glacier melt to this day
This used to be me, but I put a hook by the door where I handle my bag back up after I’ve unloaded it. I rarely go to the grocery on impulse though, so I’m always making a dedicated trip and leaving from my house, and the routine of it finally sank in. I highly recommend an extra large tote with stiff sides. I can typically fit an entire shopping trip in there for our family of 3 and just sling it over my shoulder

The amount of people doing this is infinitesimal compared to the actual homeless population. This is basically a right-wing talking point to undercut empathy with people who are experiencing homelessness.
Also you should never feel bad for not giving a panhandler money, but if you feel called to do more, just find an organization to volunteer with. There are people facing homelessness right now or in the near future in every urban and rural area in the US

Unfortunately, it would still be in close proximity to Iran and well within attack distance, so it would be completely pointless.
This looks great! I’ve been making chili crunch, which seems similar but the order is different. I fry shallots in avocado oil until crispy, and remove them, then fry garlic in the same oil and remove them. I put all the spices and chiles in a giant bowl, heat the oil to 375°F, then pour it over the spices and mix. After it cools, chop the fried shallots and garlic and add them back in. This has turned out amazing. My recipe also includes a good amount of chopped peanuts, and I use dried guajillo, pasilla, and morita peppers because I want it more flavorful than spicy. The Szechuan peppercorns are essential to getting the right flavor though

1·12 days agoBut what they’re proposing here isn’t something like the VA/feds deciding someone gets a guardian, all they’re proposing is giving physicians with the VA the power to refer people into the guardianship legal process in state courts, specifically Virginia. Potential wards would still be subject to a full vetting by county-level guardianship investigators who are typically attorneys, and then be appointed an attorney ad litem, and then go before a judge to argue their case, and then be subject to regular judicial follow-ups to make sure things are on track.
They’re not proposing tearing down any of the existing guardrails to protect people, nor are they attempting to federalize this process. Do I trust the Trump Admin? Absolutely not. But I see no shenanigans with this one

3·12 days agoNone of those rules apply at any of the housing programs we work with. People sign leases and have their own apartment. There is no curfew, no expectation of sobriety, it’s 100% free for those with zero income and ridiculously low rent for those with income, and they’re welcome to have guests as long as they don’t stay there long-term. They also have food pantries and laundry on site, as well as case managers and mental health support whenever someone needs it.

52·12 days agoBrother, yes, we have. I have a list of people I can name who we helped house in my city through public housing or permanent supportive housing vouchers and who 1. refused to move in and lost the opportunity, 2. moved in but later decided they’d rather be on the street, or 3. were evicted due to behavioral issues. Most of these people would not meet guardianship criteria, but some definitely would.

252·12 days agoSo I work with people experiencing homelessness, and can tell you with authority that there are often times when we know someone meets criteria for guardianship and would genuinely benefit from it, however they have no known next of kin and the alternative state-initiated process can take years.
Based on what I’m reading, they’re not talking about seeking guardianship for someone just for being homeless, they’re talking about people who have debilitating medical or psychiatric conditions, which often co-occur with homelessness. I think this is a good thing, and I wish my state would support enhanced guardianship capacity for the civilians who need this.
I notice the title posted here has been edited to remove “some” homeless veterans, which was already doing the heavy lifting as clickbait for the NYT. This effort is clearly not aimed at homeless veterans, but some homeless veterans may be impacted if they meet guardianship criteria.
they should not be in a position that they have to make that choice
I actually agree with this. They shouldn’t have to do this, but have to because they’re being attacked by much more powerful countries, and this is one of the only ways they can strike back that can directly impact and influence average Americans.

We’re kind of not at all having an energy emergency, actually. Most states have pretty diverse energy generation portfolios, so electricity costs are not as responsive to global oil prices as e.g. gasoline for cars. The reality is there’s already tons of wind and solar online, and that’s going to continue even if Trump tries to stop projects on federally controlled land
