  • I love how the author keeps bringing up how expensive it would be to implement a system of cloud computing rental because no one would pay the amount it would require to make such a thing profitable. But we’re talking about Jeff bezos here who took billions of dollars worth of loss for over 10 years before making Amazon the profit machine that it is now. Simply by making things cheaper for a long period of time until the customer base eas so used to the model that they could picture doing it any other way and their competition went out of business. I can totally foresee them doing this exact thing with cloud computing. Make it really cheap get people hooked where they have gotten rid of all of their in person computers and then, once access to home computing is either prohibitively expensive or impossible to do because parts are no longer available or otherwise impossible for people to switch away, jack up the price and make it profitable by squeezing every dime out of the average consumer.

This was also, by the way, Netflix’s strategy as well as Spotify and all the other cloud-based services that people are “addicted to”. Take billions and loss to get people used to your service and not consider any alternative. Then once you have a captive audience shoot that price to the Moon.

  • I see your point but I would counter with the fact that these are probably all lawyers who know the ins and outs of our justice system better than most people and should they join the ACLU or other organizations that are going to be suing the government over all of the civil rights abuses that they’ve been perpetrating these people will be invaluable.

Course that’s all predicated on our court system not being corrupted before we can put through a regime change in this year’s midterm elections. Trump is trying hard to shove in as many friendly judges as he can right now.

  • As with everything, it all depends on what you find boring.

There’s no action in Citizen Kane. There’s a small mystery who’s answer you may have seen in other media without knowing. Mostly it is a biography about a fictional character, complete with interviews with friends and enemies of said character (the titular Kane). You only actually get to see and know the character through flashbacks.

It should be noted that the character is actually based partly on a real person.

  • I’ve been saying this for years. If you are “being good” in order to appease a deity or to secure a comfortable afterlife, you aren’t a moral person. Goodness should be for its own sake. Do unto others isn’t about ensuring better treatment of yourself, its about treating people the way you wish to be treated yourself without the expectation of quid pro quo.

  • Once upon a time I objected to the Black Lives Matter moniker. I didn’t disagree with the message that black people need to be counted more than they were. I have always thought that I counted black people as equals to everyone, so I just subconsciously completed the sentence by adding the word “more” in my head. Thinking to myself “oh, they have a terrible branding issue because everyone who reads the phrase Black Lives Matter will automatically just think they mean Black Lives Matter More”. But ultimately that wasn’t the problem. It wasn’t the phrase that was the issue.

What was the real problem was the inherent racism that had be ingrained into my consciousness by untold years of media and politics that continually make black people out to be lazy selfish useless people who only want a handout. (See Ronald Reagan’s speech about the “welfare queen”. Hint, he wasn’t talking about a white woman.)

In the end the problem I had with the phrase “Black Lives Matter” wasn’t their fault for picking a bad phrase. It was, in fact, me and my own preconceived notions of what a black person is and should be. All based on how society has portrayed them my entire life.

So now I very loudly say “BLACK LIVES MATTER”. And more people need to embrace this instead of trying to logic it out of existence with the pointless platitude “well ackchually all lives matter” like some snivelling little child with an inferiority complex. Because yes all lives should matter but in our fucked up society black lives usually don’t.
