I’ve been so nervous for our bird friends here. We’ve just gotten a break from the extreme heat, but now we have wildfire smoke making the air itself dangerous from halfway across the continent.
They’ve been shutting down our outside work for safety, and birds have more sensitive breathing than we do, so it must be tricky fire she the millions of birds and many other animals in that range.
Minneapolis to Boston is about 1800km, and Google tells me England is 1400km to give you an idea of scale.
Its shameful the lack of coordinated action from both the US and Canadian government, there should be a proper joint emergency action before wildfire season starts, its not a surprise event and work can be done in advance to help alleviate the impact and spread
I would love to see that kind of coordinated action.
Instead it sounds like the US is just trying to sue the Canadians for it, and I have my own particular complaints about Canada’s conservation efforts, but I don’t know enough about their government to really publicly complain about it.
Thankfully satellites and drones do seem to be improving fire detection. Both nations have so much area to cover, so getting early eyes on fires should be helping a lot.
While the world still refuses to address climate change, I fear the fires that do grow large are only going to get larger.
I just want to see more preventative work done, there is plenty we could be doing for fire prevention if we allocated the (significant) budget and focus to it, woodland is so important to us on many levels let alone animals we share the spaces with.
We still have people trying to deny climate change in the UK, with the recent heatwave you had people saying it wasnt as bad as one in 76, just the dumbest shit.
We have a number of rescues that do photo shoots, but you guys get flight displays, which we don’t. I need to get me a passport!
