Ugh, an ad.
Seriously if you want censorship resistance, please use one of the 100% free to use Tor nodes maintained by people like me
Not only does it cost you nothing, but us Tor node operators can’t doxx you or track you, the way any VPN can
But Tor is always slow as fuck for me.
Try using a different bridge, or not using a bridge.
Try switching circuits (Ctrl+Shift+L in Tor Browser)
Also note that Tor is not designed for anything realtime or streaming. Those use-cases break its anonymity model. Do not use for voice, video, realtime games
Hello, fellow Tor relay admin!
Maybe it’s a silly question, but would using a VPN, like Mullvad, in conjunction with TOR make it even more secure, or is that just redundant?
In most cases using a VPN with Tor makes you less secure.
Any threat model covered by VPN+Tor is like a million times better covered by simply using Tor Bridges and no VPN
Thank you!
Back on Reddit /r/tor this was such a common question that someone made a whole subreddit just so “/r/torwithvpn” could be replied as a FAQ
Here’s a privacy-preserving link to the subreddit post. It’s good info, worth the read
How is nord? My PIA sub ends soon and I’m wondering if there are better options out there. I need something that supports port forwarding.
It works quite well. A lot of sites I visit can detect if a server I’m using is from a VPN and block it but it’s quick and painless to hop to a different server the site doesn’t recognize and passes me through. Using it in Linux is fine and all but it has the annoying habit of blocking my subnet so I can’t download torrents directly to my NAS drive.
NordVPN wasn’t hiding my IP address when using bittorrent, so if you’re using it for that you should test if it’s working.
It’s been working just fine for 4 years. Never had an issue with it as long as I configure my torrent client settings to only use NordLynx in case it drops off.
You checked with ipleak.net? I thought everything was working fine but when I checked using the ipleak torrent my IP address was fully exposed. I used the exact same configuration with Proton and PIA and everything was fine. There are a number of posts on reddit and github, etc, from people who have experienced the same issue.
It happened to me early last fall, and there were posts from the summer about it.
NordVPN leaks your IP address when using bittorrent and it doesn’t have port forwarding.
Any idea how that’s possible? Does bittorrent use a different port then normal internet traffic?
I don’t know. (but also, yes? Bittorrent traffic will use a port you specify?)
All I know is that I started investigating, tried all of the settings, and then found that someone mentioned they didn’t have the same problem with PIA so I switched to that. I’ve tested multiple times since and haven’t had an issue.
Last I checked NordVPN didn’t offer port forwarding, but I could be wrong.
Neither does Mullvad, which is the one I use.
