i live in a small rural town, at 60 i’m one of the youngest, nothing but endless care helpers visiting here; cooking, cleaning, gardening. i have asked a few why they stay if they cant cope. Pride, stubborn seems the most common reasons and the government is paying, so they are ok with having young people pay for uni, can’t afford housing and pay for their care… can delude themselves they are still in control I guess?
I’ve been called over at 4 am a few times to help the old lady next door, feints and falls off the toilet, lying in a pile of her own shit, super frail hubby can’t lift her, finds her and rings me.
Couple on the other side get me over semi regularly to help move and lift things, she has some sort of neurological wasting disease, he has dementia and cancer.
Of course I help her but when life gets that you need your neighbours help several times a year as you’ve collapsed in the toilet at 4am in a pool of shit maybe its time to move ? He died the other week and she has no plans to move…
