I’m completely speechless. This looks so terrible I thought it was a joke, but apparently Nvidia released these demos to impress people. DLSS 5 runs the entire game through an AI filter, making every character look like it’s running through an ultra realistic beauty filter.

The photo above is used as the promo image for the official blog post by the way. It completely ignores artistic intent and makes Grace’s face look “sexier” because apparently that’s what realism looks like now.

I wouldn’t be so baffled if this was some experimental setting they were testing, but they’re advertising this as the next gen DLSS. As in, this is their image of what the future of gaming should be. A massive F U to every artist in the industry. Well done, Nvidia.

it’s incredible that this can be done in real time on a consumer GPU.

this is also stupid and completely useless

Apparently right now the game runs on one RTX 5090 and the filter on a second 5090. It’s also ugly as fuck. If I want to see AI slop I can just look at YouTube shorts. No need for a 5090 or two

      a consumer GPU

That’s a stretch for a demo that’s using two GPUs working in tandem that each cost roughly a month’s salary of a US worker ($3k).

Two 5090s can hardly be considered a consumer gpu set up. (They are over $5000 each here at the moment).

Isn’t this like applying instagram filters, which can be done on run of the mill smartphones?

It’s not done 60+ times per second on phones. And I’m not even sure all this processing is done locally in the first place on Instagram and such.

Eh not really. Instagram filters are hard coded to work on people and mostly work by scanning for facial features and placing a 3d model/effects in relation to it. This actually generated an entirely new image based on everything in the original.

Me with modern AI all the time:

"This is impressive. Amazing. I love what technology can do now.

Why the fuck did you put AI in this?"
