J. D. Vance’s spiritual memoir is short on the spiritual and long on hypocrisy, oscillating between complaints about “the elites” and half-baked policy ideas that show little engagement with the Catholic social teaching he professes to admire.

I think Trump either has dementia, or the drugs he’s being given by his docs have serious side effects that we’re all seeing and interpreting as symptoms of old age, and these people in the wings, Vance, and particularly Vought are the powers behind the throne. It is to their advantage to keep Trump in power, because none of them have the charisma needed to win an election.

Remember Seneca’s quote, “Religion is regarded by the common people as true, by the wise as false, and by rulers as useful.”

When former New York Times columnist Ross Douthat asked Vance on a podcast what policies marked the Trump administration as particularly Christian, he replied that the administration had lowered taxes.

Apples and oranges. The bible generally says people should pay their taxes.
