Yeah my parents had me when they were 40 and 38 respectively so they are now mid-70s while I’m in my 30s. They are definitely slowing down; taking longer to process new information, forgetting small things, etc. I can feel them reaching the age soon where the roles might reverse and they will start relying more on me. Fortunately I’ve got a good relationship with them and live close by.

I’m a big movie fan and have only recently discovered this channel but I find it has a nice mix of interesting takes backed up with citations from academia.
Great answer. I would also say that lemmy users tend to be more politically engaged in both directions, so there is less of a homogenisation of view points into the “reddit-consensus” when it comes to upvotes.
I remember using reddit in 2012, being at the end of my teen years, and only having discovered it a few years before: everyone on there seemed to clever compared to other social media at the time and I let the “reddit-consensus” genuinely affect my opinions. There was this post in 2012 where the OP was fearmongering about a free trade agreement Obama was trying to negotiate, saying it would harm small businesses in the US, with protectionism very much being the consensus. I had this moment of incongruity where I wanted to offload my critical thinking to the consensus but at the same time I thought, “This isn’t right; I usually support free trade deals…” Bit of a formative experience in terms of using more critical thinking when browsing the internet.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the worst game you've ever had the misfortune of playing?
1·21 hours agoAh I remembered it being short production time but a month makes more sense. The stuff in that doc about how the devs smoked cannabis the entire time too was nuts.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's something that you discovered about yourself only after going to therapy?
7·23 hours agoNot something from therapy per se but I found out antidepressants didn’t seem to work for my chronic fatigue symptoms that seemed like depression because I actually had an autoimmune disease called Ankylosing Spondylitis

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's the worst game you've ever had the misfortune of playing?
3·1 day agoThere’s a great making of documentary for this game where it’s revealed that this game was essentially all coded by one developer in a weekend
I was 15 so pretty awkward. Might have started to do more serious exams that would determine whether I went on to higher ed. Main concerns would be getting served in old man pubs underage, getting invited to as many parties as possible despite being moderately antisocial, and indulging in any contraband I could get my hands on.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you think of the Singapore approach to drugs ?
2·3 days agoIt doesn’t even completely eliminate drugs. I know a - stupid - person who has bought weed in Singapore. They handed over the money to someone and then returned to the same location the next day to pick up from a different person.
I think the sex scene at the start of Don’t Look Now when the couple have just lost their daughter to drowning is an example of an essential scene for the plot. There is so much psychological depth in the two grieving people trying to find solace in each other.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some good media that un-glorify conflict?
2·4 days agoThis film had just come out when we had family friends come and visit us from the states. There were kind of tragic circumstances because my dad’s friend, who he’d met on a student elective in the 70s in New York, had recently killed himself but he’d always loved visiting Scotland. His brother, nephew and uncle were visiting to see what had resonated with him so much about Scotland.
Anyway this movie came up in conversation around the kitchen table and my dad asked his deceased friend’s uncle if he’d seen it. He replied, “No sir, I fought at Iwo Jima so I don’t much care for war movies.”

4·22 hours agoMAS*H the 1970 Robert Altman film is a dark comedy following battlefield surgeons in the Korean war. Based off a semiautobiographical book with a similar premise.
Essentially the surgeons try to keep themselves sane in an insane environment by playing practical jokes and generally making light of the darkest situation imaginable.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What do you wish you'd have known before you started your hobby(s)?
1·6 days agoNot sure if they meant column counter since you can easily get that too with
Ctrl+x =if your cursor is over a character.Line counts appear at the bottom of the emacs window by default but has a limit where it stops incrementing somewhere in the 10,000s. Also would be slower to return a value since it needs to open the file to get the count, unlike
wc -lwhich is virtually instantaneous.
