This is literally George W. Bush’s fault, he’s the one who pushed the DST changes several weeks earlier in the spring and later in the fall in 2005. This and Hurricane Katrina happened at the same time.

46·1 month agoHegseth’s father was a basketball coach for high schools across Minnesota before retiring in 2019; his mother is an executive business coach who has taught with the Minnesota Excellence in Public Service (MEPS) Series, a fellowship and leadership program for Republican and center-right women.
She’d probably say “You’ve always been a disappointment to this family. You should’ve gone to war with Iran last year.”

Buc-ee’s really lost me when they opened one in Bastrop on 71 and planted a billboard over Hruska’s, trying to drive away their business, but I would never go there regardless.

3·1 month agoWhat you see on this map is the Hispanic population overwhelmingly supporting Talarico over Crockett, and vice versa for the black population. This bodes well for a general election, given Texas is 40% Hispanic.

Today I Learned@lemmy.world•TIL owning a dog was associated with a 24% lower risk of dying from all causes over the course of 10 yearsEnglish
111·1 month agoJust riffing off the headline here, but owning a dog is directly associated with engaging in the act of walking a dog, and walking is pretty well established to be good for overall health. There’s no reason to assume there isn’t causation when there very well could be
In 1887, a group of American Civil War veterans from Pennsylvania planning a reunion at Gettysburg proposed the return of Confederate battle flags from three units, including the 28th Virginia battle flag, in hopes of enticing Confederate veterans to attend. Grover Cleveland, then president of the United States, issued an executive order in support of the plan. However, many Union veterans opposed the idea, as did some Southerners. Opposers included then-Governor of Virginia Fitzhugh Lee (a Confederate veteran and the nephew of Robert E. Lee) as well as Jefferson Davis who stated that the flags belonged to the capturing states and that returning them would break “all known military precedents”. Cleveland eventually rescinded his executive order.
We have forgotten our history.

12·1 month agoIs there any evidence this is happening at Ars Technica? They’re pretty transparent about their methods, and obviously tech-savvy. Just because it happened at Teen Vogue doesn’t mean it’s happening at Ars. Conde Nast publications seem to be run pretty independently. Take The New Yorker, their content remains amazing and seems fully independent.

Yes, I know my experience is far from universal in the US, but I’ve never had a job where I didn’t have decent PTO. Even working grocery and retail when I was young it was pretty good. Later for a hospital system I was getting 26 days + 9 paid holidays. Now I get 28 days + 11 paid holidays. These PTO policies apply to everyone too, from housekeeping to maintenance to licensed staff.
I haven’t looked into it, but don’t quite a few US states and localities also have their own PTO laws? I very much wish the US had federal laws in this regard, because I know there are many bad actors employing people
