  • That’s an inherent risk when your assets are managed by an external party. Cash in a bank is seemingly always accessible because its “liquid.” Liquid means it is a ledger that almost everyone uses.

If no ledger is available to show how much the bank can give you when you ask for it, OR the bank no longer HAS that cash on hand - they can’t give you that asset.

Every asset requires a special ledger. Destroy that ledger or that asset… the asset is effectively gone.

We know exactly what happens when these situations occur. If you obliterate a house, there better be a ledger showing you purchased insurance in the case of loss, otherwise you are SOL. If people lose faith in a bank, and a bank run occurs - the cash gets exhausted and people are SOL until cash comes back.

If all of your physical and cash assets are stored in a physical vault, and the vault is destroyed, those assets are gone.

  • That is not all they have. Please don’t become complacent.

They operate through fear. They need people to be anxious of anything insignificant and unlikely to be harmful. If its not the LGBTQ+ community, its the Hispanic community, the Black community, the Muslims, the educated, the credentialed, the disabled. If they can point to a group and say “The other party supports these people that are a threat to you” and they all say it, they’re more likely to believe it, and ignore what the true cause of the problems is.

  • While we can be wishful, conservatives will always exist, and it would be better to prevent them from doing more damage.

It would, however require constitutional amendments that would essentially neuter the Unitary Theory of the Executive.

    1. In my head, it would give each branch of government it’s own physical law enforcement.

    2. And money generated or excess received by the branches must still be appropriated by Congress without exception.

    3. the electoral college should be ended and ranked choice become required.

    4. Undo citizens united

    5. Do something to get people with actual brains running for office. No idea how to do this one though.

  • Man. I’ll tell you, looking around the desktop training hardware that nVidia now sells, they better fear that their business models are toast.

If nVidia walks away from all this stupid wealthy, fine. The hardware we can give each engineer is worth it.

Edit: For late arrivals to this if you’re curious why someone anti-LLM could be happy with this - its because the hardware is model agnostic. Whatever data and training algorithm you give it, it will be able to work with it. That expands the domain beyond signal generation (what Generative AI does) and gives engineers the ability to feed data intensive problems to it that we have long desired to make sense of.

I didn’t say they should be, I said they probably are.

Like, we know authoritarians are inherently a detriment to society. I don’t think there is a single example in history where people benefited from authoritarian rule equitably to the ruler. Clearly cognitive dissonance is required to support authoritarians, and cognitive dissonance is a defense mechanism commonly found in anxious disorders. Projection is another one.

Given the focus authoritarians have of defining masculinity on things that have little benefit to any gender, they are projecting insecurity about their own masculinity, and performing all sorts of mental gymnastics to avoid the remaining anxiety.

Mix in a little of phallic humor that has at least existed since ancient times, and one can come up with the idea that they simply are insecure of their penis size.

  • I’m conflicted in that theory as time goes on. Prior to 2020, I would have agreed with you entirely.

Now, I’m not so sure. He fought against the invasion of Afghanistan by the Soviet Union, defense is and easy thing to understand. His goals with the US are much less clear to me. If it was to merely punish the entirety of US citizens and weaken US international influence, I say yes, easily.

But that doesn’t make sense, as it has been confirmed that the US provided military training directly to bin Laden but military aid was not sent directly to his militia and funneled through Pakistan. I dont know enough about the guy, but it is quite possible that he was entirely unaware of the indirect nature of the aid to him. So he just could have been retaliating for the perception that the U.S. gave him training and abandoned him.
