pics@lemmy.world•This is Jehan Pages, the top developer behind GIMP, a free open source photo editor. Adobe executives hate Jehan. Because of his hard work, Adobe lost millions of dollarsEnglish
2·3 days agoMy first job out of high school was doing GIS mapping for the National Wetlands Survey with a stereo scope, high altitude infrared, and topo overlays. I was comparing old data to new observations and manually drawing the identified bodies of water onto mylar over the topo. After that, I’d write the labels and lines on a second mylar overlay.
All of this was then given to a digital mapping team that plotted everything a using specialized mouse. That was 25 years ago, give or take.
The GIS software was so insanely expensive back then. To see something of this caliber for free is impressive.

Cool. Glad it worked for you.
Yeah, that’s cool. For me, the beauty of Arch is how naked it is when I install it. It’s like “least priveleges” but for my workstation. I only add the crap I want. No more, no less.
I cut my teeth on FreeBSD 2.2.1 way back in '97 or whenever the hell that came out. Suffice it to say, that OS was naked as hell. Arch feels like coming home to me in a strange way, even though BSD is still solid. Linux is a much better workstation that BSD these days.
edit: perhaps I’m something of a masochist. :)
I get that people like things to be easier, but honestly, Arch’s installation process is so streamlined these days that I don’t see that as the selling point. However, if it provides a better driver experience, then that’s cool. Simply not something I need.
Is it just me or is /c/memes almost completely non sequitur?
