  • in what ways is GrapheneOS actually more secure than LineageOS?

In many ways. This document provides a detailed overview of Graphene’s unique features, and is worth a skim even if you’re unfamiliar with some of the jargon.

My very reductive summary is that Lineage is primarily focused on reviving and bringing modern features to old devices, whereas Graphene is focused on hardening the security of AOSP as much as possible.

Both are de-Googled. Lineage is good for e-waste prevention, but not security. You will never be able to secure a device that can’t receive kernel updates because the OEM abandoned it, and “state actors” are certainly not the only people who can exploit those vulnerabilities.

  • This is nonsense. Everyone needs the most secure phone possible, especially considering it’s the only device some people will ever own. None of the other de-Googled offerings come close to the security features that Graphene offers, some of which are custom built solutions. They go above and beyond what the typical ROM does, which is why it even supports a lot of banking apps that would normally be blocked.

There’s a good reason people talk about GrapheneOS a lot lately, and not any of the many alternative Android ROMs that exist.

Also, let’s keep in mind that GrapheneOS only supports Pixel because they don’t want to allow people to run their OS on hardware they don’t think is secure enough

Obviously. That’s the point: Graphene isn’t just any de-Googled ROM, it’s specifically a product designed for security-conscious users. If someone doesn’t care about security and just wants to dick around on an old Android device, they can use one of the many toy ROMs out there (like iodé)

The main goal of Graphene OS is to protect users from some very specific attacks like some devices police uses to unlock phones or some targeted hacks by state actors.

That’s simply not true. It does do those things, but that’s not “the main goal”. Not sure where you got that from?

  • xbox one x was the last good console xbox made

Was it good? The Xbox 360 outsold it (by a lot), but even that was mostly luck because Sony notoriously fucked up the PS3 launch (and in the end, PS3 sold more anyways lmao). It also had the red ring of death issue.

The Xbox One was when they started the hardcore ramp up of enshittification which never ended even after continually losing in every way to the competition.

The OG Xbox worked well, and at least managed to outsell the GameCube (though not by a lot).

  • Please explain yourself. I’m not going to judge you, I’m genuinely curious where you got this perception of Phil Spencer from?

From my perspective, he was in charge during the fall of Xbox. There may have been a few good decisions he made, like backwards compat or whatever, but on the whole he destroyed Xbox. I don’t understand how some people can simultaneously be pissed at all the terrible decisions that company has been making for over a decade while also glazing the guy in charge of making those decisions.

If Xbox wasn’t part of the monopolist that is Microsoft, they would’ve gone out of business after the Xbox One. Instead, as is usually the case for orgs/people like this, they’ve been able to fail upwards all while dragging the entire gaming industry through the dirt (eg the horrible Activision acquisition, among many others). It’s actually incredible how, despite not even needing to worry about competitive pressures, Xbox still failed so badly.

So again, what circumstances have lead you to see Phil Spencer as anything other than an incompetent moron?

  • I agree with you, but I get where the rabid fanboyism is coming from. The lack of competition in tech due to a variety of bullshit reasons (mostly corruption, look what Biden’s FTC was trying to do compared to Trump 2’s mask-off approach) have people pissed off and angry at the monopolists. Valve just so happens to be the least-bad monopolist in tech, so people like them.

People need to get competition-pilled, so they realize that Valve isn’t our savior, and are in fact part of the problem too. They might be considered “good” today, but that’s because our standards have never been so low.

Things can be, and should be better.

  • I disagree. Secretly recording someone with a phone is much easier than doing it with one of these. It’s the same issue people had with Google Glass back in the day.

I think the reason it feels creepier is because, if you’re talking with someone that’s wearing them, it feels like they’re sticking a camera in your face.

But like I could turn on my phone camera, leave it sticking out of my pocket, and record everyone taking a piss in a public restroom with nobody noticing. If I tried to do that with glasses, I’d have to turn my head towards everyone’s cock, one at a time. The neck pain alone makes it not worth the effort.

But to be clear, fuck Meta. These glasses should be banned for many other reasons.

  • Yeah it’s weird, I was just being lazy with wording, but now I want to defend BMI a little since it’s not that stupid. (I meant to say he didn’t look like the stereotypical image of a morbidly obese person, which in hindsight isn’t very productive)

It’s true that BMI is only useful for “normal” people, which excludes pro-athletes/body builders with a lot more muscle than the average person, and people with conditions that affect their weight. For the vast majority of people, it’s a useful metric for overall health. Anyone who cares about longevity and quality of life shouldn’t ignore it just because it’s uncomfortable to think about or “seems wrong” based on some self assessments. Obviously, there’s a lot of stigma around being labelled as obese, but people are judgy assholes about everything. What’s basically guaranteed, though, is that if you do lose weight to reach a “healthy” BMI, you will feel a lot better physically (and probably also mentally). Pains you didn’t even realize you had will go away, you’ll have more energy, etc.

I’m not saying you should lose weight, idgaf. Your life isn’t mine, and I’m not here to give unsolicited advice. I just feel compelled to add some extra context so people don’t draw hasty conclusions.
