Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Why are programmers so rude to beginners?
21·10 days agoIt’s true that searching on Google usually solves the problem, but the biggest issue is that it’s hard to know the exact word you need to use.
I tell people 90% of IT (and development I assume) is knowing what questions to ask, where to ask those questions, and how to interpret the answers. It’s like the search for the ultimate question in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.
As for Google, I think it’s getting less useful, so the days of saying “just google it” are gone.

34·10 days agoAm IT guy can confirm. We tend to be misanthropic loners. Bad “bedside manner” is an industry-wide problem. That’s why the A+ certification has a section on customer service skills.

Games@lemmy.world•Question about the Switch 2 port of Civilization VII: does it support multiple controllers for local multiplayer?English
2·14 days agoCiv games seem to have acquired a reputation for being underbaked at launch, at least I hear that from others. I only got into the game with Civ V and that a fair bit after it came out. Seems like people are holding up the vanilla new release to its predecessor with all expansions.
But yes it’s a bummer there’s no local multiplayer yet.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Who is an artist or public figure you still enjoy despite them being cancelled for bad behaviour?
0·1 month agoThis is going to get buried, but I miss Bill Cosby, or rather my mental model of him before all that nastiness came out.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What are some funny WiFi network names you've run into?
0·2 months agoI feel like that’s asking for trouble. You can explain away “FBI surveillance van” because an ounce of common sense will tell you a government agency isn’t likely to be so sloppy. But I could see a creepy Airbnb host who’s just smart enough to be dangerous doing exactly this.

Six of one, half a dozen of the other.
