When it comes to making a purchase of like $500 - $1000, I use affirm. My credit score is 715, and I get a rate of 16% APR. My credit cards won’t give me a lower rate than 30%. I only make 1 purchase like this per year. In 2024 I used it to by an electric bike. In 2025 I used it to purchase all the parts I needed to build a new PC. When I do this, I usually have about half of the money for the thing I’m buying already saved.

The fact like services like this are now doing rental payments is absolutely a direct result of the late stage capitalism hellscape caused by ballooning housing prices and stagnant wages. The fact that housing has been turned into a commodity to make rich people richer is disgusting.

All that aside, these services can be a much better alternative to a credit card when used responsibly and you plan well with your budget.

  • I don’t find it awkward at all. If someone’s not into me, they are not into me. I’ll respect their wishes, keep any further conversation with them brief and at acquaintance level, and move on with my life. We all have preferences, and I’m not interested in being fixated on someone that turns me down. There are plenty of other people in the world. My life peaceful and I am ok with being alone and doing my own thing.

  • The aftertaste is very subtle, one might describe it as tangy. If you are an American and have never had foreign chocolate, you’ve probably only ever had chocolate with with milk that has undergone lipolysis; and you’d likely never notice it. For the first 5 years of my life I was raised in foster care by naturalized Europeans, so my formative years involved Swiss chocolate whenever I had it. Swiss chocolate uses milk that has not undergone lipolysis, and their chocolate is very smooth due to a process called conching. Conching is a mixing process with lots of heating and aeration which allows organic acids to evaporate creating a very uniform and smooth textured chocolate without bitter or tangy afternotes.

  • The south tends to budget far less for snow removal than norther states. So when a big storm hits, it shuts things down way way longer because it takes them even longer just to clear it. The actual Post article, uses three photos as reference images, and I am sure those were the worst they could find. However, you can see from those images that streets are mostly clear. The sidewalks are a different story, businesses are responsible for clearing the snow from the sidewalks in front of their stores. With respect to parking, parking in NYC has always been ass no matter what. If people still choose to drive in the city in this weather, and they aren’t planning accordingly to leave themselves more time to find parking, that’s on them. NYC has extensive public transportation, and it isn’t super expensive. I usually cycle to work up here in Albany, but with the cold and snow I am taking the bus. The public transit up here in Albany can’t hold a candle to what NYC has, and I have no problem making it to work on time or getting shopping done. (I’m 5 miles from work, and 3-10 miles from my preferred grocery stores.)

Traditionally, men have been taught that to get married or have a partner, they need to be the breadwinner. This is partly due to women not having the right to own property, have a bank account, or credit cards until the 1960s/1970s. This means that there is a subset of men raised to believe having a job makes them an attractive partner, and that’s the only thing they need to be an attractive partner.

Women on the other hand, have been entering the workforce, and the pay gap has narrowed. Now women make on average $0.85 to every dollar a man makes. Women can be and are financially independent. So now, as a man or potential partner, you have to bring more to the table than having a job.

I think this has led to the incel crisis. You have a subset of men that are emotionally stunted because they were not taught better; while women have a the peace and security that independence brings and they aren’t going to disrupt that for just anyone.

  • Hershey has always had a sort of vomit aftertaste. The presence of butyric acid is the culprit. This compound is created when milk undergoes a process called lipolysis, which breaks down fatty acids to extend the chocolate’s shelf life. Butyric acid is also found in human vomit, Parmesan cheese, and rancid butter. This is a direct result of Hershey engineering the chocolate to have a long shelf life. During the early 20th century, when refrigeration wasn’t reliable, the chocolate brand Hershey’s adopted a milk-stabilization process involving controlled lipolysis. The method kept milk usable for large-scale chocolate production as it traveled across country, but it also created butyric acid as a by-product. Butyric acid is perfectly safe to consume.
