News@lemmy.world•James Talarico wins Democratic primary for US Senate in TexasEnglish
14·14 天前I thought that part of the reason she was running for senate was that her district had been gerrymandered out of existence - if so, she will only be in the house until January.

8·27 天前And I specifically hope for it to be of natural causes, like a massive coronary, preferably in front of cameras and reporters. Martyrdom must be avoided.
I’m saying that many governments today and throughout history have committed acts of terrorism, including Israel and the US, as well as their opponents.
I don’t know what this shot is from - in this scene in the film Luke is wearing a yellow leather jacket

politics @lemmy.world•US homeland security department partially shut down after lawmakers fail to agree fundingEnglish
9·1 个月前Ideally, the Democrats would simply refuse to negotiate at all - as far as I am concerned, their demands are the bare minimum, and if those aren’t met I would rather DHS just stay shut down indefinitely. I feel bad for the TSA workers, air traffic controllers, and FEMA workers, but if them quitting en masse after too long without pay is what it takes to grind things to enough of a halt to get some real changes made, it is better than having to shut down all federal workers, which would still be an acceptable method IMHO.
Also, can anyone explain why the Big Ugly Bill means this doesn’t affect funding for ICE/CBP/etc? I don’t understand how they can be part of DHS but separately funded. AFAIK, the shutdown discussions are related to raising the debt ceiling, and even though Congress has allocated all those insane billions to immigration enforcement, it’s all still borrowed money. I’m sure there is an explanation that makes sense, but I have yet to hear it elucidated.
Exactly - we’ve allowed our government(s) to dilute the definition of terrorism through constant misuse. It’s not terrorism to attack military targets, even if the attacker is a stateless actor. Similarly, it is terrorism to attack civilians, even when perpetrated by a government. Terrorism is not simply a catch-all term for unsanctioned violence.
Jesus fucking Christ, the man is himself a practicing Catholic!
I got a permanent ban from Reddit because of my username (after 6 months on that account), which was very similar to my username here - they didn’t get the reference, and said it was promoting violence, even on appeal. Since the issue was my username, I tried to make a new account, and that one was immediately permanently banned for using the same email address (ban evasion). I tried to appeal, since the issue had been my username, and the new one had no violent words, but was of course denied. Since they also track IP addresses and device IDs, I decided that it would be silly to fast-track getting a new phone and/or computer for fucking Reddit, and started to look at the alternatives.

News@lemmy.world•Family sues Nebraska police over fatal shooting of depressed teenager: The family says officers shot their son dead within 30 seconds of unlawfully entering their home.English
81·1 个月前I’m as anti-Trump as anyone, but the suggestion that a president has any direct control in the hiring or supervision of local police is a bit absurd. Besides which, the shooting happened in 2024, so not while Trump was President. This is much more attributable to the broad, decades-long failings in police training and culture in the US than to the actions of any presidential administration.

My biggest objection would be that he’d become a martyr, and MAGA would gain adherents. I’d much rather he have a very public massive coronary, preferably as soon as possible. That, I would celebrate with no guilt whatsoever.
