Gaming@lemmy.world•Is importing both consoles or games free from tariffs?English
11·20 hours agoIt’s a Japanese version of the Switch 2 (日本語・国内専用) and those are manufactured in Vietnam from what I’ve heard. So, there are two countries: Japan being the one holding the inventory while Vietnam is the one making the units that are being sold in Japan. I think there’s a 12.5% tariff on both Japan & Vietnam, would it be 25% (WTF?!), add duties on top of that. The customs value of this specifically is ¥62,980 ($401).

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do I have to pay tariffs for importing the following stuff into the EU now?English
11·5 days agoAs mentioned, the customs value is ¥121,119 for everything. However, the console + game + pro controller & SD card combined is ¥95,715 if I didn’t buy the additional accessories or other games. With a package bearing that kind of commercial value, does it mean taxes are higher?

01·6 days agoI’m importing most of this from Japan, where the prices are lower than in the EU. The gripe I have are tariffs before deivery (unless I book a flight to Japan buying this stuff in store, packing all of that into luggage on a return flight home) even then, is that still duty free?

There is region locking for the Switch 2 (mainly a separate console variant) as its sold cheaper than the international counterparts, it’s priced at ¥59,980 ($382) while the one from the US is $500 before tax. The reason why they had to region lock the system is the weak Yen, they don’t want foreigners to export them.
The only thing that’s region locked is language: the immediate boot up begins with the EULA in Japanese, leaving no option to change region since its fixed to Japan only or revert to English. You can only sign in using a Japanese Nintendo account and use their eShop, foreign games will work but translate into Japanese.
