  • (different person here)

    • In the US some professors focus on teaching, but many others also do research
    • most professors who do research go to conferences, where they meet and befriend other researchers from other countries
    • they also get “in the loop” on e-mail lists, announcement web pages, social media locations etc. (these are not secret, you can usually find them yourself)
    • So: if a professor in Europe happens to get funding to support new students, they will probably announce it somewhere and/or discuss it with their peers

All this is background for the following advice: Figure out what professors in your university are likely “in the loop” with professors in Europe. Do this by looking at their web pages, social media, etc. and seeing which ones have published recently. (it does not have to be a European venue or with European collaborators.) Especially look at professors you have taken classes with, especially if you did well. Then go talk to those professors and ask them for advice and leads. At minimum they will tell you the good schools to go to. If you did any projects for them, get a recc letter. If you’re really lucky maybe they’ll put you in touch with someone.

btw that whole paragraph about cultural depictions of male competence – I agree that we are all subject to oppresive social structures, but if you’re not careful that can start to sound insensitive. and it’s not really relevant to your larger point, I’d avoid it in your upcoming conversations.

  • Research VS Reality…?

Research IS reality. Academic consensus from a field of experts is far more reliable than any anectodes you’re going to find here.

Maybe you’re an exception. Sure, that’s a possibility. A doctor who knows your medical history and can meet with you over time will be able to tell that. You can do “virtual visits” if you’re low on time.

Other than that, you’re in danger of just latching on to whatever anectode tells you what you want to hear.
