Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you reorganize the ways we interact with the internet to make the world a better place?English
8·1 day agoAgreed.
Not sure about current generation, but the Gen Z people in my life do seem to understand the concept but are absolutely terrified of it. Like, if they don’t have cell service when we go camping, they are just super agitated like they’ve lost their sense of smell or something. Could just be those specific people, but that’s the only sample I have to gauge on.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How would you reorganize the ways we interact with the internet to make the world a better place?English
181·1 day agoIMO, peak internet experience was when you had to make an effort to log on. i.e. dialing-up and tying up the phone line. Yeah, the speeds sucked and sometimes you got the dreaded “all circuits are busy now” message during peak hours, but everything else about the experience was better.
When you logged into AIM/ICQ/MSN/Yahoo, etc, you did so with a purpose. You never worried about bothering someone by messaging them at a bad time because if it was a bad time to do so, they wouldn’t be online in the first place.
“Back in my day” (lol), the internet wasn’t always on, it wasn’t demanding your attention, it wasn’t pestering you with constant notifications, it wasn’t in your face all the time, it wasn’t constantly recommending or suggesting things at you (not “to” you, at you) etc, etc. It was there when you needed it but didn’t butt into your life every second when you weren’t.
You could disconnect.
I honestly don’t know what we can really do about it. Personally, I turn off pretty much anything that can send a notification except SMS/MMS and check manually when I want to. Some people hate that and get annoyed that I rarely respond instantly to IMs and such, but I hate being constantly “on” as well as the expectation to be.
Eh, yes and no.
A lot of friendships do start out based on proximity, convenience, etc but can grow into something deeper and lasting. Like, many of my friends in school growing up all had last names near mine in the alphabet. Two of those I still hang out with decades later.
When you leave college and go into the real world on your own, you find out which ones were built on convenience and which were lasting. I couldn’t tell you how many “friends” I had in college, but since graduating, I probably only keep in touch with about 10 of them regularly.
Reminds me of the saying “Relatives are who you were born into, family is who you choose”.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How to convert .mkv to .mp4 that Internet Archive will accept & stream?English
10·6 days agoI usually do everything from CLI.
Are you wanting to re-encode it to a different codec or just change the container from mkv to mp4?
To remux the file (change the container format), you can simply do:
# The -f mp4 is technically optional as it can deduce it from the extension, but I like to be explicit ffmpeg -i file.mkv -f mp4 file.mp4That should go very fast as it’s just copying the streams as-is into a new container.
If you want to re-encode it to a different codec, then you’ll need to use a more complex
ffmpegcommand.

At least Vulcans don’t make everyone else join in.

It had to be done. I apologize for nothing.

Weirdly, back in the dumb phone days, with T9 I could bang out texts way faster and more accurately so long as I wasn’t straying too far out of the dictionary. But it was super easy to add new words, and it would pick them up later.
Similar vibes:

3·10 days agoI gotta replay this game, it was a lot of fun. Long after the Wii was considered old, I bought one just for this, played Twilight Princess once, and haven’t touched my Wii since.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Where to get third party UPS batteries?English
3·10 days agoA few years ago I decided to try the lithium-ion UPSs. I’m on my 3rd year with them, and I will never go back to lead acid. I’ve got one “classic” UPS that is still in good shape as long as you don’t try to run more than 100w from it, but when it goes, it goes.
These use the LiFePO4 batteries, and I get close to twice the runtime as my old ones, and they don’t drop from 80% to 10% like lead acids do. The battery chemistry is also good for about 10 years of daily cycling, so assuming the electronics hold out, they seem like they’ll last.
The only hiccup with the model I got is it doesn’t have a serial monitor connection, but you can probably fine plenty that have it.

Yeah, that was new to me when I read the Wikipedia page. I only knew her as a character actress from guest appearances on so many shows from the 90s and 2000s.

Yeah, that’s usually how I see it, or maybe just how I’ve always interpreted it.

Not to mention, the Philosophical Raptor meme format is pretty much just interrogative shower thoughts

28·17 days agoThey have a lot of DRM-free options and let you download a clean epub, but like with other stores, it’s up to the publishers whether (and/or when) they can sell them without DRM BS.
I like being able to download the epubs directly so I can put them on my Calibre-web instance and pull them to my Kobo or my phone or whatever I want to read on.

This is approximately where it is in the print. Every time the head moves over any of those support bases, it sounds like nails on a chalkboard 😆
