Self-defence. They’ve harmed us all once, they will strive to do it again, and they cannot be rehabilitated. They could never be trusted to rejoin society, or even to socialize among themselves. Given the remaining alternative of perpetual solitary confinement execution would actually likely be more humane.

5·1 day agoThere’s nothing intrinsically bad or “archaic” about forums. It’s the forum platforms that sucked for some people. It took some thought and work to manage a forum. The only advantage a Discord server had was that it’s simple enough, a brain damaged squirrel could run one. It saved you from having to do your homework and just created a simple plug-and-play space that required no skill on the owner/mods part.
Banned for “hate speech” for telling an American propagandist to get his American propaganda out of my country. Apparently Reddit is helping with the effort to destabilize and invade Canada.

4·2 days agoThe old world dies and the new struggles to be born. Now is the time of monsters. It is neither the first time or the last. America may be done but “it” isn’t over. At 44 I’ve had to reinvent my identity from scratch more times than I can count, and I am so very tired. But life doesn’t end here just because one order falls. In every time of monsters, heroes rise. Every Luke Skywalker needs his Master Yoda. Every Ang, needs his Uncle Iroh. I may not Bea young man at the peak of his ambition anymore. But I am ready to put myself on the line one more time. To show my son, my daughter, and anyone else ready to hear that there can be a tomorrow worth sacrificing everything for.
An old man was planting fruit trees, when two boys found him and asked, “Old man, why do you plant fruit trees. They are so young and it will take forever for them to grow. You’ll be long dead before you will ever eat their fruit.” The old man said to the boys, “You’re right, I will never live to see their harvest. That’s not why I plant them. You see, I have sons about your age who will one day inherit my land. With the fruit from these trees they will feed our village for generations to come.”
I know you’re tired friend. I know you’re mourning the orchard as it burns. I know the world we grew up in is ending and the monsters are everywhere. But IT is not over. Now is the time for old men to begin planting trees they will never see the fruit of.

6·2 days agoIt’s over already. We lost.
You only lose if you refuse to fight. Look, I know it looks hopeless. I’ve been fighting for energy transitions for 25 years, if you think I don’t know what hopeless feels like? I have good news for you though. The future didn’t always look this dark once. That also means you don’t know how bright it might be around the next bend. I will probably not live to see victory if it happens; and it may never happen. That doesn’t mean it isn’t worth going down fighting anyway.
In the frame of reference of the grand scope of the universe, everything anyone anywhere has ever done is inconsequential. But in the frame of reference of right here, right now, what you chose to be, matters. It matters to everyone around you, everyone you care about, and it matters to you. MY fight isn’t over until I choose for it to be over or someone takes me out. Is yours?

3·2 days agoheory is that we must be viligent and also assume they will be legit and drive turnout for Democrats.
(to those who criticize the AIPAC Dems and what not, now is the time to get involved in Dem primaries to get more progressives in).
Technically, the best time to start building primary candidates was immediately after the last election. The second best time is now.

I don’t approve of any attack on education, but Ivy League schools have always been more about forming insider networks of nepotism and cronyism than education so I will have to say this meme doesn’t land very hard.

3·3 days agoI know plenty of older Gen X who’ve turned into pearl clutching, curmudgeonly hypocrites and even a few younger folks who’ve developed early onset “get off my lawn” syndrome. While I’ll certainly grant that it seems to be far more common among older folks it’s a mindset we all can fall into if we’re not self aware enough.
Hell I know more than a few joyless Gen Z’s who already have fallen into the habit of being utterly scandalized whenever they see someone enjoying life a bit too much. Not all by a longshot yet, but a concerning amount for ones so young.

politics @lemmy.world•This Is What Actual Christianity Is Supposed to Sound LikeEnglish
5·5 days agoMammon was an early Semitic term for wealth and material success and also the name of a Canaanite God. “Christian” denominations that preach things like the prosperity gospel, who idolize grand displays of wealth, political power, corporate or nationalistic apologism and other heretical beliefs seem to have more in common with Mammon than Jesus.

8·5 days agoListen, I’m not a Christian, but I’ve known what I assume you would consider “Good Christians” and I have fewer issues with them than most who abuse the term. The problem is they’re a small sect, and most “Christians”, at least American Christians are Mammonites taking your god’s name in vain. You should be worrying about getting their attention, not ours. As long as theirs is the dominant faith of the US, the term Christian is only ever going to mean gratuitous cruelty, not the man described in the red letters in the bible.

Language drifts over time, that’s normal, always has been. Stay on target soldier. FORMAL language however needs very strict definitions or it just stops working. Words mean things is true. That still doesn’t mean you get to say the “R” word.
