How to ‘fix’ that? Someone has to do the work to build and maintain housing? Should they do it for free?

In terms of housing, if one uses their resources to build a house for others to use, they need to retain ownership of that house in order to realize any return on their investment and maintain their ongoing providing of the housing service.
You gotta look at the nuance here. Yes, high and ever increasing rent is bad and it’s because of the abuse and poor regulation of the system. And traditional lords of the land is pretty bad however you slice it. But small landlords now can be providing a needed service. It’s a lot of work keeping a house rentable - even if you are ‘just’ organizing contractors, accountants, lawyers, etc.
Well, it’s a way to incentivize people to use their resources to provide services for others. It would be nice if people just did that on their own, but humans are generally too lazy.

Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Our understanding of reality might be a result of the way cousciousness works
1·17 hours agoScience can’t prove anything. It seeks to build comprehensive models that agree with observations by disproving those that don’t. It is specifically built in a way that uses predictions based on theory and then tests them. This process is used to avoid making useless and unknowable additions. That, and its inherent nature to question everything, is what makes it fundamentally different from religeon. However, it is based on an assumption that the universe makes sense as a physical construct. And that is because there is no other useful starting point. You can try to build a model of the universe based on any gibberish of feelings, but it isn’t useful in any way.

43·2 days agoWe don’t have proof that consciousness is the result of a physical process. But there’s no reason to think it isn’t. You can make up anything and say it’s unknowable, and nobody can prove this false; but it’s pretty much useless. Sure you can stick with ‘I think therefore I am’ as the only knowable thing, but it won’t get you very far. The physical world as science has self-consistently explained has been shown to be very practical, specifically with prediction of observation. Consciousness seems different, but there’s no real reason to assume it is.

2·2 days agoNo worse that the faux morality that comes from religion. And generally a lot better as it can be questioned, discussed and improved. There are plenty of Western countries where religious dogma is no longer connected to governance. It’s really mostly just the U.S. that has regressed.

8·2 days agoAs pessimistic as I naturally am, I actually don’t believe that. The trump administrative lies all the time, Fox News lies and spins an incredible amount, there are constant lies on Xitter. I think they do this because they have to. They know that if the truth was more unavoidable, they’d face much more backlash from the typical trump backers. I’m sure plenty of Trumpers wouldn’t care, but I think there’s a significant group of trump supporters who are only so because they’re stuck in the right wing echo chambers.

19·2 days agoNo, not everyone hates ICE, unfortunately. Here on lemmy sure. But this was an opportunity to get a message out to the Fox listeners, the trumptards, the people who have not heard, or don’t believe what’s actually going on.

6·2 days agoThere’s no reason we can’t have a moral baseline based on philosophy, community and intrinsic fairness. What we need is secular education without an arbitrary morality being preached based on some sort of sky fairy.
