        I think we are of an age. I’ve seen it more times than I can count: young man who does evil shit gets eaten alive by it later, nothing but a husk left at the end, too cowardly to eat a gun and too full of self-loathing and unconfessed crimes to do anything but wish he could. There’s a reason retired cops commit suicide at a very high rate, and I don’t think it has much to do with the boredom of unemployment.

        You’re not wrong. But no one who hasn’t seen it for themselves through the arc of a lifetime, whose immediate experience is filled with visual proof of individuals who are seemingly incapable of shame, is likely to get it yet. Which is unfortunate because it’s a hell of a deterrent if you know that’s what happens after you do all your evil shit . . .
