Update: Pearl Abyss has confirmed that the game requires an internet connection for initial setup (day 1 patch). Once installation is complete, the game can be enjoyed offline. However, an internet connection will be required every time they release a patch, the game will not run otherwise...
Nothing new. The timeline for physical games being created is always several months prior to release using the final build at the time. The only confusing part seems to be that the game can be used offline until a new patch? If the system is not online at all how will it know a new patch exists? If the game checks in when booted then thats not offline either.
