Unpopular Opinion@lemmy.world•They should bring back IRC and Usenet and use them to replace Discord and social media.English
31·3 days agoYou’re right, this is an unpopular opinion. That is exactly why people use for instance Discord instead of IRC. Nothing is stopping anyone from going back to IRC or usenet, just that the vast majority of people doesn’t want to.
And curved TVs, thankfully.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google breaks promise to provide 10 years of updates to ChromebooksEnglish
3·5 days agoFor qualifying devices purchased today whose 10-year support lifecycle extends beyond 2034, Google is committed to supporting your transition to Googlebook OS, with many devices offering direct migration paths.
It sounds like there will be an upgrade path? Just that you will have to make an upgrade that might bring significant changes to the OS 8 years from now…

201·12 days agoThis is from the leak last year. What leaked was pictures uploaded to their ticket system to appeal the result of a failed verification.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Email for self hosted services? (Not personal email)English
1·18 days agoTo be honest I haven’t done that deep search into how common it is for VPS providers to block port 25, but in the cases it has been relevant for me it has required at least raising a request and for instance for Hetzner being a customer for at least one month. I’ve figured that it’s a good thing and if a VPS provider has no restrictions at all their IP ranges are much more likely to have bad reputation and blocklist issues.

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Email for self hosted services? (Not personal email)English
4·18 days agoThe big problem you’ll run into is that it’s very likely outgoing connections to port 25 is blocked. In my experience it’s very uncommon that residential ISPs allow it, and even most VPS providers will block it unless you request access. So you’ll most likely need some form of relay anyway, and at that point you may as well send directly to the relay.

memes@lemmy.world•How Google Maps offers me an alternate route that is longer, slower, eats more fuel, and has tolls on it for some reasonEnglish
61·21 days agoControversial opinion: Apple Maps has far superior navigation currently. As in it will actually give correct lane guidance and haven’t directed me to the wrong place yet (Google Maps suggested the wrong ferry terminal recently, lol)
Also tried a few alternatives but a lot of the free apps have given the same strange directions as Google, or missed important shit like one way road directions.

22·22 days agoStill hard to see what is actually sent since it’s all over encrypted channels. To some extent you can look at the amount of data that is being sent and infer from that what might be actually transmitted. Say if the amount of data seems to match what is expected of uploading voice recordings.
Would 2 keyboards fail in the exact same way, with all caps and shift held down, but one is persistent after reboots and one isn’t? It doesn’t make sense.
Is this a typical pattern for keyboard controller failure that could be seen in this same way on two laptops at the same time?
I mean, I think it’s much more likely that some hardware failed, than that someone executed a highly sophisticated attack that worked but ended up showing obvious signs of tampering.
So the chain of exploits would have to be arbitrary code execution in VLC from playing a malicious FLAC file, chained into a privilege escalation to be able to mess with hardware and finally an attack against the firmware. This chain of exploits seem extremely unlikely. Bundled in some random torrent no less.
Honestly a double hardware failure is probably more likely.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Is everybody just struggling financially right now?English
8·1 month agoNo, and as far as I know all my friends in real life and family is doing fine as well.
Yet my feeds are full of memes about barely surviving. I’m guessing that this is mostly due to feeds ending up very US centric, and the situation there is probably a lot worse than Sweden.
bet it’s the same cum they put on their cinnamon buns

2·1 month agoFor what it’s worth, I hear that Tesla has by far the worst tracking for their adaptive cruise control and auto brake feature, especially after moving to camera based tracking. I’ve owned 3 cars with adaptive cruise control and never had any real issues. Biggest problem was a 2011 Volvo that would sometimes keep tracking vehicles going out in a turning lane, but never braked hard for no reason. Probably your Ioniq will work fine as well.

(This is not financial advice. In fact it’s very dangerous as Musks companies often perform irrationally)

I think the question is if any of the commercial displays actually have good image quality? As you say it’s often used for advertisements and in retail areas, and I’d expect that mean image quality doesn’t matter that much, just that it’s cheap.
If budget isn’t an issue I would strongly recommend going for something with an OLED display (but not QLED). I have owned 3 generations of LG OLEDs now, and I have to say that picture quality is absolutely amazing. Though I have to admit that the software just have gotten worse with each generation. Mostly you can avoid it if you’re not using the built in apps but unfortunately there are quite a lot of issues with HDMI-CEC as well. It works well with my Apple TV, but sometimes there’s some weird behaviour with other devices, like a Switch or PS5. I’d live with that if the alternative is some cheap LCD variant though.

Games@lemmy.world•After laying off thousands, Ubisoft says losing "key talents and skills" is a big danger for the companyEnglish
40·3 months agoUbisoft stock has lost 90% of its value the past 5 years though, so I don’t think the shareholders are fans.
Which makes it even more insane that they haven’t realized that it’s time to take a step back and evaluate their strategy, but I guess there’s a point that they are extremely out of touch with reality.
